Chris_B Posted 21 November , 2010 Share Posted 21 November , 2010 These things are a mystery to me, but I'd be grateful if someone could attempt to decipher the original grave reference in the image I've attached. It's is sharpened/enhanced as best as I can. Thanks, Chris.

Hi Chris, Looks like: FR4 Y9/452/7905 FR4 is Acheux British Cemetery; Y could be the plot number; 9 could be the row number; and 452 the grave number? Not sure about the rest. I am sure that someone will have a better explanation!! Good Luck, Robert
regimentalrogue Posted 21 November , 2010 Share Posted 21 November , 2010 It looks like it may simply be the document reference number "G.R.U. ..." from which the note that the reburial took place was taken from and transcribed into the soldier's file. Possibly; GRU = Graves Registration Unit.
Jim Strawbridge Posted 21 November , 2010 Share Posted 21 November , 2010 GR = Grid Reference?
Chris_B Posted 21 November , 2010 Author Share Posted 21 November , 2010 Thanks for the suggestiosn so far. It looks like it may simply be the document reference number "G.R.U. ..." from which the note that the reburial took place was taken from and transcribed into the soldier's file. Possibly; GRU = Graves Registration Unit. True, the "from" is this case could simply mean the source of the notice about the reburial, and not "where" the body had been moved from. Thinking about it, it is probaly more likely to be the former and not the later.
