TTHG Posted 19 November , 2010 Share Posted 19 November , 2010 I am trying to find out more about Frederick Gouldsbrough who died of wounds 28th July 1917. His family came from the village in County Durham, Thorpe Thewles, whose war memorial the local history group are researching. I would be grateful for any information about the battalion, its role and its whereabouts in July 1917.Any help gratefully received!

TTHG Posted 19 November , 2010 Author Share Posted 19 November , 2010 Thanks - this looks to be a useful research source but has unfortunately not yet digitised the relevant battalion war diary. I shall email them though! TTHG Have you looked on the CollectionsCanada website ? http://www.collectio...1042-130-e.html Sotonmate
KennethB Posted 19 November , 2010 Share Posted 19 November , 2010 TTHG, Try this -link- . It's for the time period you're looking for. It's the war diary for the 9th Brigade of which the 116th was part of. It should a least put you in the neighbourhood. Cheers, Ken
Al C Posted 20 November , 2010 Share Posted 20 November , 2010 There is a transcribed version of the 116th's War Diary available here http://www.ontrmuseum.ca/PDF/War%20Diary,%20116th%20Battalion%20CEF%20(Ontario%20Regiment),%201917-1919.pdf
robdrp Posted 22 November , 2010 Share Posted 22 November , 2010 He would most likely died as a result of a wounds received from large trench raid conducted by the 116th on July 23, 1917. This raid is very well detailed in the History of the 116th book as well as an appendix in the war diary for the date.
