Guest papaken Posted 17 November , 2010 Posted 17 November , 2010 I am trying to get in touch with anyone who has a copy of a book titled Hawick and the War, or Hawick and the Great War 1914-19 which I believe is a book containing photographs and details of all servicemen from hawick who served in the Great War. I am hoping my grandfather will be in the book and it will reveal little about his service Thank you alastairjkennedy@gmail.com

eltoro1960 Posted 18 November , 2010 Posted 18 November , 2010 I might be wrong but I think that Derek Robertson of the forum is the author. John
Derek Robertson Posted 21 November , 2010 Posted 21 November , 2010 You are not wrong. Ohhh yes he is!! The original was produced @ 1919 and it wasn't me that wrote it! I'm working on an update of the original book for publication in 2014 (or 2018 at the slow rate it's going at the moment). Alastair, who is your relative as I have scanned images of all of the pages.
patsy anne Posted 23 March , 2011 Posted 23 March , 2011 Hello - I'm new to the forum - I am interested in researching Nichol Davidson from Hawick. Does anyone have any information about him ? I would be very grateful for any info anyone might post. He worked at the Lyle and Scott Ltd, hosiery factory. From his enlistment details he lived at Wellogate Place (?) on 8th Nov. 1915 when he enters the ASC. Also his brother Robert Davidson, who was gassed - I know not where as I cannot find anything about him..He survived the war but was very badly effected by his experiences. Any info will be gratefully received. Patsy Anne.

There is a Pte Thomas Nichol Davidson of the Cameron Highlanders who was killed at Loos 25/9/15, and there are two R.Davidsons: L/Cpl R.Davidson of the Seaforth Highlanders who was taken P.O.W. during 1914 and Pte Robert Davidson, KOSB, who was killed 12/7/15 at Gallipoli. None of these appear to fit the details you have given? Best wishes, Robert

My Nichol Davidson (that I am aware of does not have a brother called Robert). My Nichol Davidson parents are John a Davidson and Jane Dick. He was 146688 ASC. There is another Nichol Davidson with brother called Robert Living at 16 Dickson st in 1891 and 22 Dickson st in 1901. His parents are Nichol and Isabella. Nichol is born c1889 Hawick and brother Robert born c1894 Hawick. I will have a good look in my tree to see if there is a connection with the families. jaja
jaja Posted 23 March , 2011 Posted 23 March , 2011 Hi Patsy Had a good look at my tree and both of the Nichols are cousins! jaja
patsy anne Posted 28 March , 2011 Posted 28 March , 2011 Hi Patsy Had a good look at my tree and both of the Nichols are cousins! jaja Hello jaja thank you very much for your reply and for the info. I had looked at the enlistment papers and assumed that I had the correct 'Nichol' --- but you have explained a lot more...Thank you. Oh these family names eh? Nichol and Robert - both my gt uncles - (my grandfather George was their younger brother, went into the KSOB), I thought both fought in WW1, but the only one I'm certain of is Robert - as I rememebr my Dad talking about him. He survived the war, but still suffered nightmarish flash backs about bombardment and being gassed. In spite of all this I cannot find any pension records for him. Their mother must be the Isabella that you mentioned - my aunt told me she had been given her name - you mention your tree very exciting - do you have George Mitchell Davidson? Any mention of his wife - Hannah Elizabeth Armstrong? The Armstrongs came from Newcastleton and Hannah worked at the Hosiery factory, lodging I believe with the Davidson family. I will check the details I have in my tree and post again. Many thanks jaja.; patsy anne. Just adding that I have misread your last post - my ancestors are in 'your' Nichol's cousins tree -- sorry Patsy anne.

Davidson of the Seaforth Highlanders but I hadn't heard that he ws a prisoner - but that doesn't mean he wasn't ---- it gives me another 'track' to follow.. Many thanks again. patsy anne.
