Norman Carr Posted 17 November , 2010 Posted 17 November , 2010 Can anyone advise if the Service Number SS/4425 for Pte James Creed of Army Service Corps can indicate his probable enlistment date. At some point he transferred to 18 Bn KRRC. He was KIA on 3rd October 1918 serving in the KRRC with Service NumberA 203757. He was awarded the 1914 Star as well as the British War and the Victory Medals
Admin kenf48 Posted 17 November , 2010 Admin Posted 17 November , 2010 Not so much the number, but the notation No 1 Labour Company see http://www.1914-1918.net/ASC_Labour.htm which is confirmed by his entry into theatre in August 1914. The SS prefix indicated Supply Special http://www.1914-1918.net/prefixes.html I've seen a number of records of ASC soldiers who transferred into the Infantry either voluntarily or for the 'good of the service'. A six digit number usually means a renumbered TF soldier, but he would have been allocated a new Regimental number on transfer to KRRC anyway. The six digit numbers were usually issued in batches. http://www.1914-1918.net/renumbering.htm After looking at the above links you may find it useful to go to the home page of the parent site http://www.1914-1918.net/grandad/grandad.htm Ken
Norman Carr Posted 18 November , 2010 Author Posted 18 November , 2010 Ken, Thank you for your information, it ties up with "rumours" from the descendants of James Creed, ie that he enlisted and was in France by the end of August 1914. I couldn't believe it! I wonder what sort of military training the 1st Labour Coy received. Incidently, do you know what "Supply Special" actually stood for? Other information indicates that 1st Labour Coy disbanded in 1915, and James Creed then transferred to the 18th Bn KRRC which was formed on 4th June 1915. I will be interested to learn if his KRRC Service Number A203757 indicates a June 1915 joining date, as this will confirm what a long and arduous service he had- and then to be KIA only a few weeks before it all ended.
Admin kenf48 Posted 18 November , 2010 Admin Posted 18 November , 2010 Sorry I thought you'd seen his mic, the date he entered theatre (went to France) was 26th August 1914. Do you have his date of birth? In the service records in Ancestry there is a record for a Corporal 24449 James Creed who was in the Supply section of the ASC but left the Army in August 1876 aged 35. I can't believe this is your man, he would have been nearly 70! I have no idea why theses pages are in the WW1 section - could it have been his father? As for the numbering for the KRRC as ever http://armyservicenumbers.blogspot.com/2009/06/kings-royal-rifle-corps-regular.html is the authority, and indicates later than 1915. Given the numbers shown I think we can ignore my comments about the TF I don't know what Supply Special stood for but assume it was the quartermaster section of the ASC. Ken

Norman Carr Posted 19 November , 2010 Author Posted 19 November , 2010 Thanks again Ken. Once more I am now able to piece together a little more of the jigsaw. James Creed was born 17th January 1883, son of Henry and Ruth Creed of Waddesdon, Bucks. Thanks for the tip on KRRC service numbering. In due course I shall have to follow that up. Best Regards
