Michael Pegum Posted 17 November , 2010 Posted 17 November , 2010 If anyone has photos of panels 6 and 8 on the Menin Gate, or other sources, could you please solve this one? The CWGC entry is as follows: Name: O'DONNELL, OWEN Initials: O Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Royal Fusiliers Unit Text: 12th Bn. Date of Death: 31/07/1917 Service No: 48326 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 6 and 8. Memorial: YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL However, the Donegal Book of Honour gives the same number, battalion, date of death and panel on the Menin Gate but says he was in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. I hope an inspection of the panel on the Gate will resolve this, or maybe someone has other sources. Michael
David_Underdown Posted 17 November , 2010 Posted 17 November , 2010 His MIC certainly states Royal Fusiliers http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=4620388 I suspect someone "corrected" the entry in teh Donegal book along the way, assuming he had to be serving in an Irish unit.
MickLeeds Posted 17 November , 2010 Posted 17 November , 2010 UK Soldiers Died in the Great War (Ancestry version) has him as resident in London and with the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). The same for Ireland casualties of WW1.
Michael Pegum Posted 18 November , 2010 Author Posted 18 November , 2010 Many thanks to both of you. That seems very clear and, as suggested, there must be an error in the Donegal Book of Honour. Michael
