My great-grandfather (Gilbert Brice Wood) served in WW1 (we think), but we're unsure which regiment.

The scanned picture we have is below:

I was thinking artillery or cavalry, based on the jodhpur-ish trousers, but the shoulder lanyard thing might indicate RA of some sort?

The cap badge doesn't look like any RA one I've seen online though.

Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum samwise,

definitley artillery beit Field, Garrison or Horse as there is no distinction between the badges. There are several Gilbert Woods listed on ancestry, a place and DoB my narrow the search down.

Thanks for the welcome thumbsup.png

We think it's maybe March 1893 in Cranborne, Dorset.

I don't think it's any of the RA cap badges. It looks more like The 1st (Kings) Dragoon Guards. Super picture though and definitely cavalry, by the spurs and ammunition bandalier.

Are you able to scan the badge more closely?

RA for my book. No way Kings Dragoon Gurads.

Definately Driver RA.

RA also. There is an MIC for Gilbert Wood, Driver, RFA, 1650 renumbered as 966688, but none with B or Bryce.

This man could also be a gunner as there is nothing in the photo to say that he's a driver just as there's nothing to say that he's a gunner
