Whilst researching my husbands family tree,i discovered his great uncle.Septimus Shuttleworth was awarded the Star,Victory Medal and British War Medal.I have now found that the service location was Europe, and his service number-3468/Es .Would it be possible to find out which boat he served on?,i presume it would have been a requisitioned trawler. Many thanks Christie

His service record, showing ships served,is on microfilm at Kew under ADM188/1173 which covers surnames from SHA to SOZ.

He was an Engine Hand. Did you get your info from the Medal Lists on Ancestry UK. If so did you notice another Shuttleworth, same medals, same series ES (and close) number ?

Thanks for that, yes i did get the info from Ancestry UK.I will have another look as i know he had another brother in the great war ,but cannot find any info on him at all.Iwas told the brother John Suttleworth was in the 1st East Yorkshires, not the navy.

Once again many thanks,i am getting quite a list when i go to Kew!

The page shows John Shuttleworth 1782/TS,with the same medal issue as Septimus, who is one entry below his.

As he was RNR his record of service will not be in ADM 188 and the reference quoted is only an index for RN ratings. His original RNR record of service is held at the Fleet Air Arm Museum and on microfilm (but not on-line) at Kew under reference BT 377.

Thankyou both for the info.I have just looked on Ancestry UK and found John Shuttleworth, hopefully this is the one i am searching for though i cannot understand why he is in the navy.According to thedischarge papers of Henry E Shuttleworth(gunner in R.F.A.)his next of kin,John, was in the 1st East Yorkshires

Thanks again for your help

having looked through this again,i think it is possible that this is the right John Shuttleworth in the mercantile merchant navy. In1904 he was a deckhand on the "Mino" which was attacked by the Russian navy with some damage, the skipper later died .So i suppose it follows that he should enter the war on a requisitioned trawler .Will see what else i can find out
