Wow... they are fantastic images

Had a thorough look through them, they certainly obliterated the place.

Thanks for sharing

Yes I thought some of the Aerials were outstanding Wendy. The ones taken at an oblique angle of the battlefield showing crater upon crater as far as the eye can see..well, it takes the breath away....

Trying to identify aerial photos with places and landmarks on Google Earth, if anyone can tell me how to transfer some map references given in the aerials onto trench map co-ordinates I'd be most grateful.

Anyway here's one I've been able to work out, running ENE from Poelcappelle towards Westroesbeke......(Aerial from....Salt Spring Island Archive)

Yes Martin..these photo's obviously appear to be held in their archive, maybe the aerials are from areas the Canadians were active in....

These photos are from a French soldier's collection, wonder how he got them. They look like Passchendaele at first glance.

It would be a sportive engagement here for pals to indentify single aerials in order to create then and now's....

These photos are from a French soldier's collection, wonder how he got them. They look like Passchendaele at first glance.

A number of them are from the Somme;

Le Transloy, Le Gouvernement, Combles, Morval, Sailly Sallisel, Le Priez Farm and Rancourt to name but a few. All to the east of Albert.

These are identified purely from entries on the photo's themselves. It is beyond my knowledge to identify from the co-ordinates.

I saved a few but gave the files the names of the places, thus losing the original file number. If someone else doesn't do it before me I will have another look and at least identify some of them with their file number.

Go for it Kevin!!......although the site these come from, state that they are WW1 aerials from France, not so as we can see..I've posted a Passchendaele "then and now" on the "Western Front" topic.

Ok it's Combles...Well done Michael..I've had to edit the post to congratulate you..we must have posted at the same time.....

The aerial from the site mentioned at the top of this topic has it with west being at the top. In order to orientate it North/South it must be turned 90deg anti-clockwise.

I've marked the rough area covered by the photo on the trench map and the quarry with the red flag, this is found bottom centre of the aerial photograph. Notice that Combles is mis-spelt on what is the western edge of the print. Again..well done mate...

regards

Tom
