Actually, I had that very thought when I opened the thread just now Kim - they do look very impressive indeed. Brings to mind the Duke of Wellington's (alleged) "... but by God, they terrify me!".

Continuing the ducal theme, Churchill claimed the Duke's only stated regret was "I should have given more praise". Well, after The Ashes of course...

Cheers, Pat

And not in step .............

Did you find that on the back or is it because there was a Gnr D Harper 177804 of C/317 Bde RFA that was in the 63rd RND when he won his MM ?

Hi Charlie,

Just the surname 'Harper' in pencil on the reverse hence the question mark.

Thanks for the other details much appreciated

Regards

Might be a good fit but Harper, RFA, RND, MM might not be unique. LivesoftheFirstWorldWar has this on the Harrowden, Northants Memorial for him. Was the photo found in the area ?

Charlie

PS photo of Denis's brother Edwin is on this old thread. I suspect Harrowden have collected some good archives for their memorial and may be able to confirm photo (or even like a copy).

The buttons aren't leather as they have the eagle and crown on them. It just my scanner being bad. Also thanks G.T. for date, the image and an explanation for the eagle being trimmed.

Dear GWF1967,

Thanks for that.

Interesting to see the Officer at right having dispensed with the cross-strap of his Sam Browne belt.

The AIF left their Sam Browne cross-straps behind when the 6 Aust Div went overseas in early 1940 - but the Great War...

Kindest regards,

Kim.

Two postcards from the Middlesex Regiment

Army Service Corps

I like the photo of the Middlesex Regiment group in shirtsleeves, it’s very evocative of its time.  Great view of greyback shirts, an issue cardigan, and the shrugged-off braces typical of men doing physical labour.

Wear and tear? Is 23822 his number?  There are a few names with this number on ancestry.

I have a couple of postcards with similar numbers. I believe its a thing added by dealers.

Ah ok so maybe the writing is something a dealer wrote as to condition of the card?
