His Ditty box is depicted there :-) . Note how the kit is rolled and not folded as per the regulations.

Thoughts on this one?

Anyone have any clue as to nationality?

Initially I thought he was an Aussie, but with rank on both sleeves I don't believe he is.

Not the typical khaki drill I'd expect for British army, so I'm really at a loss.

Brilliant!  A very famous horse!

It was this pair.  Same studio and backdrop too.  Your chap is late 1890s early 1900s.

The very Horse was still in use during the Great War.

Certainly got their money's worth out of him, and the back-drop too, 20+ years worth

Thanks Bob, nice to have it confirmed.

Below is another of my mystery photos, and I'm not even sure if it's military, but there is a connection

Written to 6607 L/Cpl William Falcon Lewis Colee, 20th Battalion, AIF two days before he embarked for Australia

The mention of Harrods has me thinking department store, so maybe delivery drivers, I really don't have a clue

Over to you .....

Six members of the January 1917 Reinforcements (AMC Details) waiting on the pier just prior to embarking from Melbourne, Victoria per HMAT A70 'Ballarat' on 19 Feb 17

From their kit bags I've identified the first three soldiers (L - R) as -

  • 17080 Gnr William Freeman Murrells - 13th Battery, 5th Field Artillery Brigade - WIA (GSW L.thigh, L.leg, L.hand - severe) 19 Apr 18 - RTA (Invalided) 15 Sep 18
  • 17087 Pte James Percival Ball - 7th Field Ambulance - DoW (GSW both legs) 4 Jul 18

Note the wearing of the rolled greatcoats also the medical pouches on the front of their belts

The men at left and right are wearing cut-down Corblimey or Winter Service Dress caps. Can't be sure if the man seated left is wearing a soft cap or a stiff cap with the wire taken out. Mid-1916 seems the most likely date if the former, otherwise any time in the first half of 1916.

Many thanks indeed for this extra detail. Sorry for the slow reply.

2 ASC Sergeants. Couldn't help noticing the boots on the man on the right. Taken in probably 1917/18.

Never seen that patch on 5th Battalion before, thought they wore them on the back, looks like 17th Battn to me. JG

Killed while serving with the 5th Bn may have served 17th prior to that. I'll try and confirm previous service when I see the Museum Curator on Thursday.
