Fromelles Posted 20 March , 2019 Share Posted 20 March , 2019 I'm not overly familiar with the establishment of the NZEF nor that familiar with deciphering kiwi records but gave it a go anyway. 1/478 S-Sgt Richard Lyall Craik PHILIP - Born 16 Mar 1896, he was working as a Government Cadet at the Valuation Department in Wellington at the out-break of war. Richard enlisted 10 Aug 14 saw service in Samoa (15 Aug 14 - 3 Apr 15) with the 5th (Wellington) Regiment, returning to NZ he was discharged at own request on 15 Apr 15. Re-enlisted 30 May 16 and allocated to the 19th Reinfs, Canterbury Inf Battn, C Company. He embarked from NZ in Nov 16, and disembarked at Devonport in Jan 17. He left for France in Mar 17 and was posted to 2nd Coy, 2nd Bn, Canterbury Inf Regt 25 May 17. Wounded 13 Jun 17 he was sent to Blighty, and never returned to France, spending the remainder of the war in the NZ Records Office in London where he was promoted Staff-Sgt 30 Mar 19. He embarked for NZ in Nov 19 and discharged on 11 Feb 20. Having survived the war he was killed in a motor accident 8 Jun 28. The naming of the 19th Reinforcement bit doesn't look right to me, can anyone explain how the NZ reinforcement thing worked? Dan

GWF1967 Posted 20 March , 2019 Share Posted 20 March , 2019 R.F.A. Group. Old Contemptible at the right hand end of the front row, 3 wound stripes on the man 2nd from left, front row, and also on the Gun Layer seated next to the 2 Lt. Two old sweats with 4 long service chevrons, one with 6; not a rank stripe between them! The man with 6 stripes looks to be sporting a medal ribbon. Gardenerbill Posted 21 March , 2019 Share Posted 21 March , 2019 I have often wondered whether when you get the slightly staring look as per the photograph in post #6439, it is because the sitter blinked when the photographs was taken and the photographer has subsequently touched in the eyes. His Ditty box is depicted there :-) . Note how the kit is rolled and not folded as per the regulations. 1904. The kit depicted was stored in the kit bag (with a solid brass disk in the bottom) that was stowed in racks. The hammocks, when not in use, would have been neatly "lashed" and stowed.
