john gregory Posted 19 October , 2010 Share Posted 19 October , 2010 Exellent image, the only flash that I can find with the 5 on is, 1/5th East Lancs, white on green diamond, 1/5th L/Fusiliers, white on crimson diamond and 1/5th Manchester. Although it is not cut like a diamond.

Andrew Upton Posted 21 October , 2010 Share Posted 21 October , 2010 Queens Royal West Surry's 1-4 Btn. Almost had a bit of a shock then, as I have the medals to a Lawrence Upton who served at one point in the QRWS - but his would have to be the only surname prefixed by his initial in the whole picture, which seems unlikely... Out of curiousity, his medals were issued with the Queens Regiment details on them, the same as on his MIC, which I though was just an abbreviated form of the QRWS which his service record shows him as serving overseas with. Yet a quick look through other MIC's shows them having the full QRWS - why the difference, something purely clerical or something else? http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=5869487&queryType=1&resultcount=4 Medal card of Upton, Lawrence Corps Regiment No Rank The Queen's Regiment 16422 Private Labour Corps 71846 Private http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=5419444&queryType=1&resultcount=7 Medal card of Smith, George Archibald Corps Regiment No Rank Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment 11104 Private King's Own Scottish Borderers 31077 Private Royal Dublin Fusiliers 29962 Private Royal Dublin Fusiliers 7075697 Fusilier

john gregory Posted 21 October , 2010 Share Posted 21 October , 2010 Pte. Mannion, Rifle Brigade, I cannot remember his christian name, I think it was Charles, the brother of Bernard Mannion who's photo I put on earlier. He was my friend's grandad, when he spoke to his grandad in the sixties he asked if he had shot anyone, he replied," I do'nt know lad but I let a good few off ". He had been wounded at St. Julion and as he got back to the trenches he was almost shot a second time by either a an officer or M.P. thinking he had deserted. He was a right character who sold his war medal for beer money.
