Medic as a signalman quite rare?

My time "Other skills" did not do medical duties and seen as second class.

I know RAMC needed signals, drivers, cook and bottlewashers but duel hat?

I'm glad you thought so too. I looked online and couldn't find another.

He looks quite proud of his badge.

Sadly, I fear work will interfere with my wants and desires.

Could he have been qualified in signals before he went into the army & took the rating test? Would he have gotten extra pay for the skill? I have to admit I've never seen such a skill badge on a RAMC man. Thanks for posting it. Maybe he was a Boy Scout when he learnt his craft?

I'm glad it was of interest.

I'm 99% convinced it's John William Duncan (6328/426012), 1st (West Lancashire) Field Company, Royal Engineers.  He lived at 49 South John Street, St.Helens, Lancashire.  His Mother was Louisa Oakes and he's named after his Dad, also John William Duncan, who died when his son was 3 years old.  Louisa then married my Great-Great Uncle, William Gamble, and had another 16 kids, of whom 3 served in WW1.  John William Duncan was raised in this family and seems to have been particularly close to William and Louisa's eldest daughter, Emily.  He joined the Army at the age of 15 in 1898, first joining the South Lancs Militia and then remustering into the King's Liverpool Regiment.  He joined the reserves in 1906 and was discharged in 1910.  He re-enlisted into the RE TF in 1914 and embarked for France on 3 Jan 1915.  He was wounded on 27 June that year.  By the end of the War, he'd been promoted to Cpl.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,
Mark

Hi Mark thanks, the Absent Voters List for St.Helens states that at 49 South John Street also lived James Gamble 3594 Pte RAF and James Gerrard, 341646 Pte RAMC....So this confirm what you believe to be True.

I am about to add the Image of John William Duncan to our Gallery if that is all right please?

MANY THANKS

Yep...that's the family.  James Gamble's service info is incorrect in the AVL.  By August 1918, he was a Sgt Mech and had completed pilot training; he went to France the following month.  His older brother, George, had died in September 1917 after being commissioned from the ranks in the Rifle Brigade.  Another brother, Ernest, was in the Navy and is listed in the AVL at the Garner family's home in Traverse Street, just round the corner from South John Street (Ernest had married Sarah Garner whose brother, Joseph, was a POW).  James Gerrard married Eva Gamble, James Gamble's younger sister, in January 1916, just before he went to France with the 1/3rd West Lancs Field Ambulance.  He was awarded the MM for actions in the early stages of 3rd Ypres.

By all means post the image to the Gallery area of the St.Helens Rolls of Honour website.  I go there quite a lot, given that all my family is from there.

Royal Engineers at rest. Note the economy Service Dress dating this as wartime. It is interesting to see a Mk1 SMLE still in use.
