RNCVR Posted 9 June , 2004 Share Posted 9 June , 2004 I wonder if anyone might have details on HMS LYNN - or where she might have done her WWI service? She was an MFA Minesweeper built in 89 & taken over by the RN in Oct 14. She survived the war & was sold Mar 20. Thanks in advance, Bryan
Guest Jeff Floyd Posted 9 June , 2004 Share Posted 9 June , 2004 Bryan, On 23 October 1915, HMS Lynn (identified as a destroyer) was involved in the rescue of troops aboard HMT SS Marquette, which was torpedoed and sunk just outside Salonika harbor (167 dead of 741 aboard). This site has some interesting data on the New Zealanders aboard (especially the nurses): http://www.rootsweb.com/~nzlscant/marquette.htm Other than that, I don't find any mention of her. Malcolm Posted 9 June , 2004 Share Posted 9 June , 2004 HMS LYNN, Pennant No M39 (1914), T 13 (1915), T 57 (1918), 609 tons, launched 1889, (originally LYNX, renamed ) , 2 x 2 pounder guns, listed as Screw Minesweeper. Of the 11 listed, 2 were at Sennen Cove 1915, the others in Northern waters. HMS LYNX, K (Acasta ) class Destroyer, mined 9th August 1915 in the Moray Firth. Probably where the confusion arises. Lörscher Posted 17 October , 2019 Share Posted 17 October , 2019 Hi Bryan, I can add some actions from LYNN from Kew files: 23./24.01.1918 escorted HM Submarine E.14 (Lt. White) from Korfu to Mudros, at least from the western end of the Korinth Channel, was seen by German UC 23 while doing so, but latter was engaged with hunting an small local convoy off Doro Channel. 14.02.1918 saved the 9 survivors of S/S VENTMOOR, sunk by German UC 37 while just leaving Skyros Harbour. 03.06.1918 escorted french Submarine ARMIDE and HM Submarine E.12 from Pyrgos Harbour to Mudros Harbour. amlovell Posted 17 January , 2021 Share Posted 17 January , 2021 I can add that she was under the command of John Alsager Collett from May 1915 until early 1916. He grounded her in early 1916. He was commended for his work rescuing survivors of torpedoed S.S. Marquette [?] tone
