truthergw Posted 7 September , 2010 Share Posted 7 September , 2010 If you liked Steel and Hart, you may well enjoy " In Flanders Fields, Passchendaele 1917", by Leon Wolff. Regarded as a bit old hat now but superbly written by someone who was unashamedly, ' anti war'. The fighting in the Salient in the latter part of 1917 was extremely complex and it wouldn't do to take too simplistic a view of it. It would take more than the analysis of any one book to unravel it. Several of the new offerings go a long way towards that end . " Flanders Fields" has been superseded as analysis but is, in my opinion, a classic which will repay reading for a long time yet.
Jack Sheldon Posted 7 September , 2010 Share Posted 7 September , 2010 I agree. Pity that he sparked off such a storm of 'Haig bashing' but, as you say, definitely worth a read, even if you do not share his view that the war, 'meant nothing, solved nothing and proved nothing'. NigelS Posted 28 January , 2015 Share Posted 28 January , 2015 Having previously read a library copy of Passchendaele the sacrificial ground, picked up the paperback edition for £3.99 (cover price £9.99) at my local branch of 'The Works' yesterday.
