Hi ,

I used mainly Medal Cards with Dates of Entry on them and the War diary dates for for Drafts leaving Ireland. Also quite a lot of the Medal Cards for men with Date of Entry in 1914 on them had their Battalion numbers on them, I then used any Service Records I could locate.

This research has been very useful in confirming the transfer of John Dillon (3766) to the 2nd battalion. My wife got his 1914 Star for me and his record stated 3rd battalion which didn't appear to go overseas in 1914. I now have to do some tracing of his movements (amongst others I am doing!). Is there any information on his transfer out of the 2nd battalion - presumably to the Royal Irish Rifles? Regards. Reg.

Hi. I'm completely new to this forum and I'm not sure if I'm using the best means to ask a question but I'm trying to find out more about my great uncle, 9095 Patrick Hannigan who is mentioned here. Is it possible to find out whether Patrick was a regular soldier before the war? I've found records of Patrick's death and grave through Ancestry.co.uk but I can't find any record of his enlistment. I understand that the 3rd was the Reserve battalion and I wondered if that was significant. Any help would be much appreciated!

Regards, Sara

Welcome to the Forum !

I should illustrate to you that it isn't a good idea to tuck your enquiry on the end of another thread as it tends to be overlooked as members will often not see what you need to know. You could open a new subject on the Soldiers section where you will find a quicker response. Just title it with the soldier's name, number and Regiment.

Patrick died of wounds on 3 Nov 1914 whilst serving with 2 Battalion, which was part of 5 Infantry Brigade of 2 Division, one of the first Divisions to land in France (14 Aug 1914). He himself first landed in France on 31 August in a replacement draft for casualties incurred at Le Grand Fay on the 26th August.

He was an acting Sergeant at the time of his death, normally a Corporal,so likely to have been a Regular before the war. You will likely learn that once you have made another thread.

The significance of 3 Battalion is that it was a Reserve/Training Battalion at home which provided soldiers to front line units to replace losses.

Hi mhifle,

By accident I cam across your entry. I probably found a interesting detail in connection to your post.

I read 'Stand To' a diary of the trenches 1915-1918 by F.C. Hitchcock MC and he wrote about the death of pte 3551 P. Burlace, 2nd Bn. Leinster Regiment at 12-8-1915.

When I searched for this soldier in the CWGC database he turned out to be 16 at time of death and the additional Information states: Son of Pte. Burlace, who also fell.

http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/1605196/BURLACE,%20PATRICK

When I use the CWGC database search it seems very likely that his father must be: Pte 4335 Thomas Burlace 2nd Bn. Connaught Rangers kia 9-12-1914, age 50.

http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/305011/BURLACE,%20THOMAS

I thought you might like to know this, even if it's just a tiny detail.

Best regards,

Paul

Hello, I found this thread very interesting. I am trying to find out some information on a soldier called Private, 9859, Christopher Flynn, 2nd Connaught Rangers, who was captured at Mons. According to his Silver War Badge Record he enlisted in 1909. Does anyone know if the Connaught Rangers appear in the 1911 Census. I have struggled to find a reference to a Christopher Flynn, who, in 1911, would have been aged 22 years.

Thank you.

Hi Mark,

I rarely visit the forum these days so a bit out of touch I'm afraid. All I have found for 9859, Christopher Flynn is an address - Mill Street, Ballina, Co. Mayo. You might already have this though. The 2nd Bn. were on the 1911 census but unfortunately their names were not recorded in full, just initials. The 1st Bn. were in India and names were recorded, I've searched there just in case he was with 1st Bn at the time but no luck.

He was likely captured during the retreat from Mons at Le Grand Fayt on 26th August 1914 where 200 + officers and men were taken prisoner. If you search the forum for 'Grand Fayt' there are many matches.

There is a record in the 1911 census -

F C 21 Male - Roman Catholic, Mayo, Labourer, Read and write, Single

This could well be your man.

C.Flynn was one of six brothers from Ballina  in the Connaughts, all survived the war. Three were POW's, Christopher and Patrick(6833)were taken POW at Maroilles near  Le Grand Fayt on the 26-7/8/14.He gets a mention in the book"Mayo comrades of the Great War" as he wrote to the local POW relief fund thanking them for their parcels.Patrick Flynn stayed in Leeds post war and died in the 1950's'

Perhaps @museumtommight be able to add something.  Are you aware of his project memorialising all those Irish soldiers (sailors and airmen) who served?

Hi Frogsmile,

I was not aware of this project but would be very happy to contribute what I have on the Flynn brothers. Also I would like to understand @Mark Gamble interest in Chris. Perhaps he has some other info, but I cannot contact him.

thanks
