Hi,

I am trying to find out some information on the Croix de Guerre which was awarded to my Great Grandad, his name was Arthur Joseph Edwards and he was in the 2/4 Queens Regiment of Croydon and he was awarded this during his service in WW1. I desperatly want to know what he recieved it for for a family tree I am creating, can anyone help.

P.S. I have already checked the list on Wiki so wondered if anyone knew who might be good to contact???

Hi There,

Firstly, my area is the 1st NZEF, but I'll point you where I would look.

London Gazette - A record of the award should be in here somehwere - http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/

Searching the Gazette is an art form so perhaps more knowledgeable people than myself can help you with that.

Then, you could try a MIC (medal index card) search on Ancestry (if you have an account) or the National Archives

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/browse-refine.asp?CatID=10&searchType=browserefine&pagenumber=1&query=*&queryType=1

Hope this helpes.

Cheers

Grant

Hi bookemdano

I have a data base I have been working on for approx 9 years, that has over 37.000 names that are gazetted for foreign awards for the WW1 period. I do not claim that it is 100% but must be very close.

I have checked & I do not have Arthur Joseph Edwards listed.

As I tell every one, there were cases especially with the French & Serbs, where medals were given to Commonwealth service men & women, & no permission was given by the commonwealth for them to be accepted( I have a few in my collection). These were not gazetted but are usually mentioned in unit War Diaries as awarded. I have a 14 star trio with Russian medal to a Red Cross nurse that is not gazetted but authority was given in the British Nursing Journal that she was awarded the medal.

So you have to do a lot of research to prove or disprove the award.

As to why he got the CdG the only way of finding that info is in a local newspapers of the time period and / or War Diaries

If you do prove the award, could I ask that you let me know the details so I can add them to my data base.

Good luck

Peter

I can only suggest that you look up local news papers & the Units War Diary, as no citations were given in the LG.

He would have been entitled to wear both.

Sorry for the hijack,

Peter is there mention of William Irvin Brown in your database?

He served with the 13th Yorks & was awarded the Croix De Guerre in October 1916.

I have the citations for this & his DCM awarded at the same time, if you want further details PM me.

Cheers

They seem to have been mounted for some time, but I have not been able to find anything out.

Do you have him on your list?

Many thanks, Andy
