RFT Posted 9 August , 2010 Share Posted 9 August , 2010 Included with the medals of my Gt Uncle, Lieut RNR, is a RAOB (Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes) Medal. Date of issue is not known but must be pre-1936 for he passed away in that year. Among his papers is reference to him joining a Lodge at Oban, Scotland in 1917 (while on active service there) but he doesn't state whether this was a Freemasons Lodge or RAOB. A little later he makes reference to assisting someone through their 2nd Degree (presumably a Masonic term). Does any member know if it is possible to research membership of the RAOB and/or Freemasonry. Rob
LarsA Posted 9 August , 2010 Share Posted 9 August , 2010 2nd degree could also be a RAOB term. Not sure whether you can research all members, but if the individual lodge still exists there may be help to get from them. ATB, Lars
RFT Posted 9 August , 2010 Author Share Posted 9 August , 2010 Thanks Lars. I know nothing of the RAOB and didn't relaise 2nd degree was a term used by them. Regards Rob
Matt Dixon Posted 9 August , 2010 Share Posted 9 August , 2010 There are four degrees of office within the RAOB: Brother (1st degree) (Kangaroo) Certified Primo (2nd degree) Knight Order of Merit (Knight or Sir) (3rd degree) Roll Of Honour (Right Honourable) (4th degree) If you try the following website, you may well be able to find someone who could assist you in your enquiries. http://www.raobgle.org.uk They are run on very similar lines to Masonic lodges, but one doesn't have to be a Mason to be a member.
