sammyb Posted 24 July , 2010 Share Posted 24 July , 2010 Hello all, I have a splendid photo of my gt grandfather that is annotated "Third Army School, September 1917" Does anyone have any more information about this establishment - location, what it did, what the men did there, any records etc? I wasn't sure with forum to post this topic so I hope this suits. Cheers, Sam
TEW Posted 25 July , 2010 Share Posted 25 July , 2010 Sam, I have an entry of my Grandfather's dated 26/1/1918 that says;- 'No. 5 (200963, Sgt. Baines, R. is I think in the wrong place as platoon Sergt. he recently went to the 3rd army school at Warloy and obtained a good report for musketry.' Warloy is Warloy-Baillion which is about 6 miles west of Albert. I think you should also check the thread below as the 3rd Army School appears to have had various locations, and I guess they upped sticks and moved further west quickly in Spring 1918!! Amor Posted 26 July , 2010 Share Posted 26 July , 2010 Sam, There is some discussion at below thread stating the Training School was in Flixecourt: http://1914-1918.inv...howtopic=101734 Rgds, Alex
sammyb Posted 26 July , 2010 Author Share Posted 26 July , 2010 Thank you very much for your responses. Flixecourt would make sense as it looks to the region where he was based. From the article referenced by TEW it looks as though there were a number of third army schools for different aspects of training. I'm surprised there isn't more information out there about these places. Cheers, Sam
PDGRIFFITHS Posted 30 November , 2019 Share Posted 30 November , 2019 I found that my Grandfather attended 3rd Army Musketry School in August 1918 at Fort Mahon, which is adjacent and North East of present day Fort Mahon Plage on the coast.
