Guest kenmcn Posted 12 June , 2011 Share Posted 12 June , 2011 Hi, Would the war diary for the 10th Bn give me any details of the actions of 'D' Company on the 1st July 1916? I am trying to get some background on my Great Uncle who was killed in action on that day. Many thanks Ken

benking Posted 17 August , 2020 Share Posted 17 August , 2020 Hi, I am wondering if there is any mention of the 8th South Lancashire Regt also 2nd and 11th that joined the 2nd Battalion in 1918, there was a lot who were drafted into it, I'm researching Private James Fairhurst 40490 (11.S.L) 49747 (2.RIF) and have precious little to go off so any information would be greatly appreciated! Fus. He's listed as Spec. Res. on his MC citation. Can anyone help me find which Bn they would be serving with in 1918 and therefore which war diaries to check. Fern Posted 29 September , 2020 Share Posted 29 September , 2020 Hi Chris, thanks for responding. It’s 2nd Lt John Rankin McIlroy. He was awarded the MC and bar so was hoping to find any war diaries that may mention the action.
clk Posted 29 September , 2020 Share Posted 29 September , 2020 Hi Fern, His MC index card says that he was attached to the 7/8 Battalion - TNA war diary link (available as free downloads after registration). His original MC appears to have been awarded for his actions on 29.10.1917... and his Bar award for his actions on 26.3.1918 Images sourced from the National Archives At the time of the actions the 7/8 Bn appear to have been part of 49 Brigade, 16 Division. Their HQ diaries (here, and here/here) will probably give you more info/context to the Bn war diary, as they often include 'extras'. If you see any map references, and need any help, there is advice here. Good luck with your research. Regards Chris
