Move those books out of the way, and it looks like you can fit in another mannequin.

Before walking down that line of characters, I would definitely secure my wallet. ;)

LOL! -- hmmm well I would *REALLY* like a "feldgrau" wartime German uniform but the cost seems utterly prohibitive so unless I get very fortunate somewhere that space will have to be unfilled.  I have been working on a German equipment set which seems more manageable.

At some point I should put the mannequins in a chronological order too Prussian/Early French/Early British/Early(1916 border) Doughboy/ Later French/ AEF Doughboy of course it would then be glaringly obvious that I need a Later German and Later British.........[sigh]

What I really need to do is clear out about 3 days that I can dedicate to cataloguing and sorting out the last couple of years acquisitions (in particular photographs) because I think if I were to pack and store things more sensibly not only would they be better protected but there would also be more room. I also need to read the books -- the stack is my "waiting to be read" pile.

Many thanks for kind comments- it beats "the postman is here with MORE junk!......"

Chris

Less crammed than 4th Gordon’s. Here’s my current layout. Much stored elsewhere.

Trenchtrotter

Absolutely superb -all the iconic items one could want in a WWI militaria collection, and fantastically displayed.

All the best

Chris......I analogize collecting militaria to being on drugs: The more you get the more you want!

Since this thread has been recently revived I will add photos of my current displays.  I have also just about run out of space, and the threats from wife to inflict bodily harm have curtailed further expansion.  Brief notes are below each photograph.

Dear Gordon92,

Respect (as the Germans say)! Well done, Mate (as the Aussies say)!

Despite my having Scottish ancestors, I collect mainly to the elusive Indian Army Reserve of Officers, plus whichever Officer medal groups strike me as having "Good Story" potential.

Having said that, your admirable display ('up the stairs and to your right: you can't miss it!'), stirred feelings of the I Wish I Had That variety! I was particularly taken by the Mess Dress, Cameron Highlanders, 1920s - having kept Dad's white tie and tails, with AIF MC miniatures group affixed (shown elsewhere on the GWF).

My only suggestion to the urgent matter of space (or lack of it), which might well appeal to Mrs Gordon92, would be to create an Officers Only area, funded by the sale of the O.R.s.

Well, it was only a thought...!

Keep up the good work.

Kindest regards,

Kim.

Dear zuluwar2006,

Forty-one-odd Trench-Combat exhibits, rather tastefully displayed side-by-side behind glass - gut gemacht!

The two latter-day armorial "sentries" each side of the art-deco mirror is also a nice touch: weniger ist Mehr, after all...

Kindest regards,

Kim.

Many thanks for the kind remarks, Kim.  Yes, selling a uniform set or two to fund further acquisitions makes sense.  Most of the ensembles are attributed, and I would not wish to part with those.  However, the several unnamed sets may be fair game.

  • 4 months later...

I did a talk on Infantry Rifles at the local military museum this weekend - and put up as small display of rifles/bayonets to refer to during the talk.

There were reenactors present with many of the more standard rifles and the museum also has a nice collection so I was filling in the gaps a bit with these. The basic theme of the talk was evolution in weapon design both pre and during the conflict.

Dear Chris,

I used to fire the .303 (1917 model) at camp with the Cranbrook School Cadet Corps, Sydney, in 1958-59...

We Cadets were well-aware of the ANZAC history behind these rifles!

Kindest regards,

Kim.

PS: I now collect Officers' medal groups, which are rather more portable items...
