Chris_Baker Posted 24 June , 2010 Share Posted 24 June , 2010 James Lewis, whom I believe to have lived at Chief Street off the Crumlin Road in Clifton, enlisted into the 15th Royal Irish Rifles in September 1914 and went to France with the battalion. He was eventually discharged in January 1918 after losing an eye. He had three distinct periods of service in France. The first and last with 15th (North Belfast) Battalion and in the middle with 14th (Young Citizens) Battalion. He may therefore have been wounded twice. His service record can't be found, the war diary does not name him and he is not (easily) found in "Times" casualty lists. If anyone has any further information on this man, I would be grateful. Chris_Baker Posted 24 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 24 June , 2010 Thanks, corisande, I do have the census information - but he is not the chap you have found and is much younger (born in 1897). He was at Ballymoney Street in 1901.

Chris_Baker Posted 24 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 24 June , 2010 I take the address back - I am mixing up two legs of a family - sorry - was at Ballymoney Street (1911) and before that Everton Street (1901).
corisande Posted 24 June , 2010 Share Posted 24 June , 2010 What about local papers Belfast Telegraph Belfast Newsletter or at a push Irish Times I don't think archives of the Belfast ones are available online, but are much more likely to have Belfast info on casualties
