Remembered Today:

? Serbian medal

I have had this medal since I first starting collecting and re-discovered it whilst looking for a long lost Iron Cross.

The translation that came with it is -

In memory of the warrior T.O Preprode Serbia

Died in battle near Douranz.

Can anyone confirm whether this is a true translation.

Just about all your information appears to be wrong...

There's no name on it. And it's not Serbian.

It's a commemorative medal of the 9th (Pleven) Division of the Bulgarian Army.

ПОМНИ ВОЙНИКА, ЩО ПРЪБРОДИ СЪРБИЯ, СТИГНА ДО ОХРИДЪ И СЕ БОРН ПРИ ДОЙРАНЪ

Remembering the soldiers who crossed Serbia, reached Ohrid and fought at Doiran

Under the soldier's arm it says "9 ДИВИЗИЯ" = 9th Division.

Adrian thank you very very much, I now suspect that there may well be another medal around somewhere that should go with the description.

I'm beginning to think Adrian works for MI5.

Blast, I've been rumbled! Now I'll have to kill you :)

Mick,

I'd say rather that the description does go with the medal, but was supplied by someone who doesn't speak Bulgarian and is not overly familiar with different styles of Cyrillic alphabet.

"Prepode" is not a name, but a near-transliteration of пръброди/ pr'brodi/crossed or passed through.

"Douranz" looks a bit like Дойранъ/Doyran', especially if you're not sure of some of the letters...

(I don't speak Bulgarian. I just entered some of the words into Google and found a Russian collectibles forum where someone was offering one of these medals for sale! http://forumuuu.com/showthread.php?p=737654 )

Thank you, I have now looked up the battle, very interesting. You are probably right about not being any others relevent, I seem to remember it came with a large number of heavy badges relating to grain harvests in Russia.
