Filbert70 Posted 17 June , 2010 Share Posted 17 June , 2010 Hello could anyone give me some help with the various markings on the following 6 pounder shell cartridges please? Many thanks in advance. Ian

TonyE Posted 17 June , 2010 Share Posted 17 June , 2010 A minor point John, but "C.F." is "Cordite Full Charge" as opposed to "R" for reduced charge. See "Ammunition Markings 1918" Regards TonyE
Filbert70 Posted 17 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 17 June , 2010 John, thankyou very much for the quick and clear reply... wonderful. TonyE, thanks for the clarification. Just to clarify further, are they both of Great War vintage? Ian
johnreed Posted 17 June , 2010 Share Posted 17 June , 2010 TonyE According to my Treatise of Ammunition I quote The letter "C" if cordie or ballistite is used,"P" if powder; followed by an F or R for each time the case has been filled with a full or reduced charge; F od R barred out means that the case has been emptied without being fired. TonyE Posted 17 June , 2010 Share Posted 17 June , 2010 Indeed John that is so. If it is stamped "C.R." it is still cordite filled but with a reduced charge. The "F" stands for "Full" not "Filled" is what I was trying to say. Regards TonyE
