Diane,

As the entry is post Armistice.

"miners, pivotal & demobilization" is my attempt.

For comparison.

From the 8th Royal Scots War Diary.

17th December 1918-101 Miners proceed home for Demobilization.

One question due to my ignorance of many WW1 things....what does a light infantry have to do with miners?

shawn

ps. I think the word after miners starts with 'pis' not 'piv'

No, I think the word is "pivotal".

Pivotal men were those whose employment at home would open the way for the creation of further jobs. Anyone involved in industrial training, and such people as foremen, would be in this category as they would in turn help to produce the expanded workforce needed as industry switched back to a peace footing. They were given priority for demobilization, as were workers in key industries such as the mines and shipyards.

The Durham LI in particular had a strong contingent of miners, recruited from the Durham coalfields.
