lee greagsbey Posted 12 June , 2010 Share Posted 12 June , 2010 Hello all, I have the Naval Record for my x2 great grand father, and i am working through it. I have got to HMS Excellent, dated Between 14 Nov 1887–13 Mar 1889, his rating is a leading seaman and in the ratings & C column he seems be what looks like C GU Leading Seaman 88, I am guessing the 88 is for 1888 but as for the C GU, i dont know ?, may it be some kind of Gunner, as in the past he was also a Torpedoman's Mate. He then becomes a Petty Officer 2nd class on HMS Comus on the 14 March 1889, then a Petty Officer 1st Class again on HMS Comus between 1 June 1889 - 6 Dec 1889. Then again C Gun on the 1.7.89 in the ratings & C column. Please can someone tell me what C Gun means please ? Many thanks, Lee
ARABIS Posted 12 June , 2010 Share Posted 12 June , 2010 Hello Lee, There was a rating of Captain of Gun. e.g., badge of gun crossed over torpedo, star above, star below - Seaman Gunner Torpedoman if Captain of a Gun, 1890 - 1903. Badge of crossed guns, star above - Captain of Gun, 1903 - 1904. The 1937 Manual of Seamanship, Vol., 1, states that the rating of Captain of Gun is being allowed to die out. David. per ardua per mare per terram Posted 15 June , 2010 Share Posted 15 June , 2010 HMS Excellent was a gunnery training school and at this time an old hulked wooden walled ship. http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/port...p;_harbours.htm
joseph Posted 15 June , 2010 Share Posted 15 June , 2010 HMS Excellent moved ashore in 1891, and continued until 1985. A series of small ships and hulks continued the name, in accordance with Kings and Queens regulations. Regards charles
