NigelS Posted 11 June , 2010 Share Posted 11 June , 2010 The same day (Saturday 26th) it had been intended that they also visited St. John's, Woking at about 4pm to inspect 'New Army' troops who were undergoing training at nearby Inkerman Barracks, however, the schedule was over ambitious and the Royal visit had to be postponed until the 29th with just Kitchener and his staff, who earlier in the day had, with the Royal Family, been inspecting troops at Aldershot, attending. I can only imagine that Kitchener was able to travel at a much faster pace (visions of him charging around the country lanes in the same way as American generals are often shown hurtling around battlefields in Jeeps in WWII movies!) than the slower, more stately progress allowed for the Royal family (I posted a local newspaper report on the visits to Woking Here) The Royal Family had a busy few days of it, basing themselves at the Royal Pavilion, Aldershot Camp, between the 25th and 30th September while they carried out many visits & inspections in the area: Friday 25th - afternoon: the King, Queen & Princess Mary arrived by car at the Royal Pavilion, Aldershot then the King and Princess Mary Rode out to see troops in training. Saturday 26th - morning: the King, Queen & Princess Mary inspected troops quartered at Aldershot with Kitchener in attendances Saturday 26th - afternoon: the King & Princess Mary inspect troops at Bordon & Old Dean Common Sunday 27th - morning: the King, Queen & Princess Mary attended Church at All Saints' Church, Wellington Lines then visited the Connaught Military Hospital Monday 28th - morning: the King, Queen & Princess Mary inspected troops at Tidworth & Bulworth with lunch at Windmill Camp, Ludgershall Tuesday 29th - morning: the King & Princess Mary rode out to inspect troops at Ewshott with the Queen visiting the Louise Margaret Hospital then all three inspected troops at Frensham. Tuesday 29th - afternoon: the King, Queen, Queen Alexandra & Princess Mary inspected the cadets at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst then inspected troops at St. John's, Woking Wednesday 30th - morning: the King & Princess Mary rode out and inspected troops training at Aldershot Camp, &, after being joined by the Queen, they travelled by car to inspect Troops at Blackdown before visiting Princess Arthur of Connaught at Bagshot Park for lunch and returning to London, arriving at 3.30pm NigelS
