Jonathan D'Hooghe Posted 10 June , 2010 Share Posted 10 June , 2010 Whilst researching Lionel Charles Jones of the Rifle Brigade, I have come across evidence that before he joined the army he was a pre war merchant sailor, 1911 census as a ship's cook, I also believe that he may have served on Q Ship A.s.107 and I have a photo of this ship. I admit to knowing nothing very much about Q Ships and therefore, would there be any records available regarding the service of this ship? Thank you Jonathan
Jonathan D'Hooghe Posted 11 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 11 June , 2010 Please see a picture of A.s.107 with NCO on the deck. Any help with the history of this ship would be greatly appreciated
phil@basildon Posted 11 June , 2010 Share Posted 11 June , 2010 The vessel in the photograph is a tug, as far as I am aware no tugs were used as Q-Ships. Here is a list of WW1 Q-Ships. http://www.gwpda.org/naval/rnqships.htm
Jonathan D'Hooghe Posted 11 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 11 June , 2010 Thanks Phil. It is an area that i know very little about and the Q ship story is a family "tale"! Sounds like Grandpa may have embellished his stories a little.

davidships Posted 17 April , 2011 Share Posted 17 April , 2011 As 107 - one of the large fleet of seagoing and inland tugs of the Inland Water Transport Directorate of the War Office - run as an offshoot of the Royal Engineers mainly in cross-channel supply train and onward transport to the Western Front via the French canal/river system - and nothing to do with "Q-ships". 68grt 75.0 x 15.0 x 7.0ft built 1916 Lytham Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd, Lytham (Yd 534) 2 x steam compound. twin screw 200ihp by Lytham 19/5/1916 launched 8/1916 completed for War Office as AS 107 later transferred to the Admiralty (probably for dockyard use) Sold 1920 to Nigerian Transport Co Ltd, Liverpool for service at Lagos and renamed ORON 1933 dismantled and scuttled in Abekun creek This is the first photo I have found of AS 107 - is it possible to "iron out the wrinkles"? For a long-running study, I am always glad for any info or photos of War Office IWT vessels. David
