Guest Posted 9 June , 2010 Share Posted 9 June , 2010 my grandfather pte andrew mckenna blackburn 6313 served in the machine gun guards during the 1st world war.i down loaded the medal card yesterday and found the following information under the roll heading mgg/102 b/4 401 .no other information was contained on the card but i was pleased i found out a link into his past.my grandfather died when i was around 4years old in 1964 he was a kind man and left an impact in my mind.i have snippits of information from family word of mouth about him and i am presently trying to build a picture of his movements from joining up to defend the country those years ago.i know that he lived in burnhopefield in county durham and would have been down the pit when war was declared.a big group of lads went down to sign to join the army i think he lied about his age to get in.briefly i have checked out the internet to learn more about the war and specifically his journey through it[one weeks of research] i would vastly appreciate any information as to how i can peice together the activities of the guards machine gun regiment during the war.i read that the guards battalions grouped together into the guards division in august 1915 does this mean by reading of their movements and battles i would be on the right track regarding my grandfathers time in the war.thank you for reading this post [my 1st]if you can steer me in the right directions it would be fantastic.my purpose for finding out about him is personal and more relavantly so i can add some written information into the box we keep his medals in for the younger members of my family so they can feel the past in the future.yours sincerely john middlemas.
