mjtiger Posted 8 June , 2010 Share Posted 8 June , 2010 Hi all! I have found a couple of pics of family members in uniform and am trying to figure out who's who. I guess if I can get some help identifying their uniforms, it would help because I already know which units each of them were in. Otherwise, do the service records hold a picture of the soldier in question? I mean, did the military take pictures of each soldier when they enlisted? I have attached the 2 pictures in question. high wood Posted 8 June , 2010 Share Posted 8 June , 2010 The chap on the left appears to have black buttons which would indicate a rifle regiment. As there are no cap badges or shoulder titles visible in the photographs it is difficult to say which regiments they served in. What were their names as it may help to identify them? mjtiger Posted 8 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 8 June , 2010 I had 3 relatives in WW1 and it seems all 3 died. Their names were: Alfred Every, 8th Bn. K.R.R.C., Anthony Every 2nd Bn. Rifle Brigade, and Ernest Every, 280th Siege Bty. Royal Garrison Artillery. The chap on the left appears to have black buttons which would indicate a rifle regiment. As there are no cap badges or shoulder titles visible in the photographs it is difficult to say which regiments thet served in. What were their names as it may help to identify them? high wood Posted 8 June , 2010 Share Posted 8 June , 2010 On the assumption that the KRRC and the Rifle Brigade only ever wore black buttons, the man in the left hand photograph is either Alfred or Anthony and the chap on the right is Ernest. Were they brothers? Ernest Alfred Every. Born St Pancras, Middlesex. Enlisted St Pancras, Middlesex.178935 Gnr, KiA F+F 17-4-1918
headgardener Posted 8 June , 2010 Share Posted 8 June , 2010 They're all on listed the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web-site if you want to check them out; A. Every, 2nd Rifle Bde, 10 Oct '18, buried at Perreuse Chateau Franco British Cemetery A.F. Every, 8th KRRC, 20 March '17, buried at Barly French Military Cemetery E.A. Every, 280 Siege Battery, RGA, 17th April '18, buried at Nine Elms Military Cemetery. You just need to work out which one was married with 2 kids. There's no indication of this on the CWGC site. And, no, the army didn't take official photos of their men in those days.

mjtiger Posted 8 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 8 June , 2010 high-wood: Yes, they were all brothers of my Great Grandmother. And thank you for the clarification on the buttons. headgardiner: Thank you so much but I already have their headstone pics from CWGC. Before I posted this I was 80% sure that the pic on the left was Alfred, but I wanted to make sure if I could. sotonmate: Thank you for the info about the loss of the records. I do have their medal cards though.
mjtiger Posted 8 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 8 June , 2010 This pic is of a regiment and I want to make sure that it is of my great grandfather's unit, 6th Bn. City of London Rifles. His name was Arthur Heath, 6762/323562. Can you tell?
headgardener Posted 9 June , 2010 Share Posted 9 June , 2010 This pic is of a regiment and I want to make sure that it is of my great grandfather's unit, 6th Bn. City of London Rifles. His name was Arthur Heath, 6762/323562. Can you tell? Not without a higher-resolution image. But they are men from a rifle regiment (black buttons, as mentioned earlier in this thread). 6th London Rifles were a rifle regt.
