bigronhartley Posted 6 June , 2010 Share Posted 6 June , 2010 Hello Neil, They were in the Thiepval-Leipzig Salient, the Battalion attacked on the 17th September and achieved all objectives, but casualties were relatively high. They were relieved on the night of 18/19th September. Hope this helps. Regards Ron PS I would be most grateful for any information you might have on him. NeilEvans Posted 7 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 7 June , 2010 Thanks Ron. I'm researching the men of who are remembered on Donnington War Memorial. Now a part of Telford. It looks like he was born in Middleton, Leeds in 1881 to Robert and Jane Savage. 1881 census records the family at Rothwell, Yorks. 1891 untraced. 1901 back in Middleton. 1911 in Barnsley. A Shropshire connection is in 1908 when he may have married in the Newport District. His wifes name being Martha, born 1887, although again i'm not sure she's a local and can't find her maiden name. Soldiers Died gives his residence (NoK/Home) as Newport, Shropshire. Donnington coming under the Newport District. CWGC give Martha's adress as 127, New Cottage, Donnington Wood, Wellington, Salop. Martha died in 1943, in Wellington District aged 56. Neil

Chris Noble Posted 8 June , 2010 Share Posted 8 June , 2010 Hi Neil Yes, they are sometimes, very tentative indeed. In fact, i have one Shropshire 'Lad' up here in West Yorkshire. His links to my local war memorial are such, that further research is required, but, i will 'plod' on as they say. Keep on Neil with the research. I am sure, as i will, you will 'turn something up.' Best wishes and good luck. Chris.
