Hi gang!

Am in need of some info regarding the positioning of RFC pilots wings on a Service Dress tunic please. What i need to know is how high above the top of the breast pocket flap was the bottom curve of the wings please?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Simple answer (based on WW1 and WW2 RAF tunics) is - it varied somewhat!

Normal practice seemed to be quite close to the top of the pocket, with a minimal gap. There's a nice example on the Kaiser's Bunker website of an original cuff rank tunic where the the medal ribbands that the owner was entitled to have been added later, partially obscuring the wings. Most people seem to have just moved the wings to slightly above any medal ribband bars as the owner became entitled to them:

As long as the wings are nicely centred over the pocket, any small gap above it is probably accurate.

Hi Andy!

....had a look at quite a few photies, and it's as you say. The majority of photies show those without medal ribbons as being about one fingers width for the gap, and others show about two fingers width - lol!

The RFC & early RAF pilots were noted for their flamboyant dress. As paradied by a flash individual in yor avatar.

One my example, in the bottom curve of the wing to the top flap of the pocket is ~12.5mm. The bottom tip of the wing ~6.5mm of the top flap.

I hope this helps. :)

All the best!
