DavoT Posted 6 June , 2010 Share Posted 6 June , 2010 Good evening all, I recently added to my collection the WW1 pair to 478711 (T/4255) Sapper J.F. Scott, 2nd Field Company, RE who was killed in action 31 July 1917. His MIC indicates James F. Scott. All good so far. CWGC details list only his initials as well as family details. SDGW indicates 478711 Sapper John Francis Scott. On doing a census check I found James F had a younger brother John A who also served in the RE and according to his MIC his numbers were 478710 and T/4254. It would seem to be slight error in the casualty details. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate and may he rest in peace. Cheers, David
ralphjd Posted 6 June , 2010 Share Posted 6 June , 2010 David. In my opinion James is the correct christian name from what you have quoted, SDGW is infallible, this is not to say that any other sources are perfect, but SDGW is favourite to be incorrect. Ralph. janecavell Posted 6 June , 2010 Share Posted 6 June , 2010 The CWGC entry notes that Sapper J.F. Scott had a wife called Alice. FreeBMD shows that James F. Scott married Alice Milner in the Sculcoates district in 1911. To confuse things, though, the age at death, as given in CWGC (32 in July 1917), is a little bit out if he is the James Francis Scott whose birth was registered in the Sculcoates district in the last quarter of 1883. DavoT Posted 6 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 6 June , 2010 Ralph, thanks for that. It all ties together with his initials from CWGC and his MIC details. poppy3, thanks for the additional info on his marriage. I didn't quite get that far but it all seems to fit together. I put his birth circa 1885ish but happy to be corrected. Thankyou both. David
