nicknobbyclark Posted 4 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 4 June , 2010 Thanks Dave I've read the thread and this shows what happened to the various vessels in the incident. However, what I would kike to know is if someone can give me a little more detail on what actually happened to the fishing trawler Rideo in particular. Peridot Posted 5 June , 2010 Share Posted 5 June , 2010 Hi Nick You could see if Charlie Cox is still around in Grimsby as he was a mine of information and published a couple of registers of Grimsby vessels and their fates, which should be in the Central Library. I haven't heard of Charlie for many years though he used to be contactable through the Prontaprint shop in Grimsby. He may well be deceased now though as I say his work has been preserved. I have a long standing interest in the fishing industry having sailed as a teenager from Fleetwood. There is also Steve Pulfrey in Grimsby who has a vast archive and who should not be too difficult to trace as he is well known in trawler circles. I will do some rooting and try and find some further information. Peridot
nicknobbyclark Posted 5 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 5 June , 2010 Hi Peridot Thanks for the leads on this question. I seem to remember contacting Steve Pulfrey some time back so I'll look for his contact. I'm sure there's some more detailed information on the fate of trawler Rideo. Interested to hear you were on the Fleetwood trawlers. Did any members of your family ever serve with the Royal Naval Reserve Trawler Section or the RNPS? Regards Nick

Regards Nick Hi Nick No problems for the leads and may have an e-mail address for Gil Mayes somewhere or it may be on the Fleetwood Float site. Will have a look. I don't have a family history of fishing unfortunately and was only discussing some of the old dockside characters yesterday. However I have known many of the older hands of the RNVR and RNPS in Fleetwood such as Sid Kerslake who wrote a book on his experiences in the Convoys, Peter Snasdell, the Wright's and other names too numerous to mention (mostly former Skippers or Mates). Sadly they are getting fewer in number tho there is still a thriving RNA in Fleetwood who regularly meet at the Sea Cadet Base (TS-Cochrane). If you want any trawler info in the future then PM me as I do still have access to lots of Fleetwood stuff. If you should come across any info about Charlie Cox perhaps you could let me know as he was very helpful to me at one time. He used to describe himself as the last of the Grimsby Longliners and we got on quite well though never met. Have you ever heard of him? Terence Munson Posted 5 June , 2010 Share Posted 5 June , 2010 Hi, The ID of the enemy vessel that captured and sunk Rideo has also eluded me and has been on my look-up list for some time. The crew of nine were made PoW and interned at PoW Camp Ruhleben. Rideo’s Skipper, Charles E. Backhouse was released in 1917. One possible source could be in a report he made on conditions at the camp. It may also include conditions the crew were held under on the German vessel when taken prisoner. The report is held at TNA: PRO Piece reference FO 383/312 Page Link Another possible source is BT 110/397/59 Page Link As I said, on my ‘to do’ list next time I’m at KEW (I've given up asking for printing quotes!) - but out of town research trips are on hold for a few weeks. Cheers, Terry ps I believe Charles B. Cox is no longer with us but I have a copy of his excellent research.
Peridot Posted 6 June , 2010 Share Posted 6 June , 2010 Hi Terry/Nick Thanks for posting the info about Charlie and would have been very surprised if he had still been with us, as he would have been a great age now. I've had a look for Gil Mayes e-mail address and can't find it though he is active on the Ships Nostalgia site and the query may be worth a post on there if you haven't already done so. nicknobbyclark Posted 6 June , 2010 Author Share Posted 6 June , 2010 Hi Peridot/Terry/Dave Thanks for all your help with this question. Peridot I have a copy of Sid Kerslake's 'Coxwain In The Northern Convoys' which I think is a superb book. The title is now sadly out-of-print however, it can now be read online at: http://www.naval-history.net/WW2Memoir-Rus...voyCoxswain.htm If you have only time for one chapter then read Chapter Four - CONVOY PQ.17, the Russian convoy "massacre" June 1942. Do you happen to know if Sid's wife is still with us? I don't think I've had contact with Charlie Cox before but would be interested in reading some of his work. Terry Thanks for the Document references I will look into these. Cheers Nick
Peridot Posted 7 June , 2010 Share Posted 7 June , 2010 Hi Nick I haven't heard of Mrs Kerslake in a long time but will make some enquiries. Fleetwood is a relatively small place and it doesn't take long to find out if someone is still about and I do try to keep abreast of Fleetwood news and still collect postcards of the place. Charlie's work was mainly in the research and publication of Registers of Grimsby Sailing and Steam Vessels and I no longer have copies as I got rid of my Hull and Grimsby stuff many years ago for storage reasons and naturally wanting to concentrate on Fleetwood. There will be copies in reference libraries I am sure. Peridot
