Remembered Today:

Magic list of escapees?

Hi All

A friend of mine related a story he had been told regarding his Great Grandfather during the war who is reputed to have been captured and later escaped. Whilst suspecting a family myth, he has asked how he could go about confirming or denying the story. Unfortunately, he is not sure which unit his grandfather belonged to (may have been Black Watch) or really any other pertinent details except that he may have been an NCO but was probably not an officer. He has not checked if the relevant service records are still in existence (which presumably would record such an event) but if they are not, what else could he do? Is there a 'magic list' of escapees or would the first step be a trawl of WO161?

THANKS IN ADVANCE

Danny

A group of forum members were compiling the WO161 index into a database, for publication on this site. Can anyone give us a progress update?
