Henry William was born 16 Aug 1886.He was drafted into the 1st Depot Batt. Quebec Regiment (52018DR) at 21 years 4 months on 3 Jan 1918. He was 5"8 & 1/2, Complexion - Ruddy, Hair - Brown, Eyes - Blue.

He was killed on the 6 Nov 1918 with the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles Battalion. He is commemarated on the Onnaing Communal Cemetery in Nord, France. It contains ten Commonwealth burials of the First World War only.

Can anyone help me to find out what happened to him. He is a far removed ancestor of mine.

Luke, Ted Wigney's "The C.E.F. Roll of Honour" indicates he was killed in action, the other men from the 5th C.M.R.'s also were killed in action. There is something called the "Circumstances of Death" file which may give more information on what happened (most of the time it will say Killed in Action but you never know). It would be worth your while to order his service file from Library and Archives Canada, the circumstances of death file is held separate and must be mentioned.

My avatar is the capbadge of the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles.

Thanks guys,

really useful help...a war diary to read too! Fantatsic!

Had a look at the relevent pages already...thanks!

Is there anywhere that draws a timeline for the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles in specific. I would be interested in what battles he would have been involved in in the months leading up to his death....if not will have to work out myself from the war diary!

Is there anyone who may have access to canadian newspapers from the Montreal, Quebec, Canada Area? There may be an article and picture of him somewhere. Finger crossed!

Luke, I had a chance to look through the 5th C.M.R.'s Part II Daily Orders which I have; Pte Miles was taken on strength on transfer from the 14th Bn (also from the Province of Quebec) on September 19, 1918. Since he attested in Montreal on January 3, 1918, and allowing for training, crossing the Atlantic, etc., this is probably when he started to see service at the front. He may have seen some service with the 14th or possibly not as with the continual casualties incurred in the 100 days, most C.E.F. units were in constant need of reinforcements and the reinforcements may have never served with the 14th. Only his service file will indicate this.

His death, listed in the Part II's, is given as November 7, 1918.

Oh...so he transferred to the 5th from the 14th Battalion! So he was definstely with the 5th when he died?

Is there any way you would be able send me the bits of Part II which relate specifically to henry miles? His death date in Part II differs from CWGC then? I will send you my personal email via a private war forum message.

Thanks for the insight chris, you are a wonderful help!

Luke
