biffrocks Posted 29 May , 2010 Share Posted 29 May , 2010 Hi I wonder if anyone can help me with the mic for F J Burley as I have looked on Ancestory and it comes up as 1st battalion north staffs regt engineers. I am not sure how to interpret the card as it doesn't look as if he transfered to the RE. If anyone can shed any light or information it would be very much appreciated. Thanks Rob
ralphjd Posted 29 May , 2010 Share Posted 29 May , 2010 The card information is a bit of a mess alright. To me it reads that his Victory and War medals would have been stamped with the RE details (as per the x and small dots) and his Star medal with the North Staffs stamped on it, this being the first of the three medals for WW1, thereby denoting his move from the N Staffs to the R Engineers. In my opinion, for what its worth Ralph.
kloughnane Posted 29 May , 2010 Share Posted 29 May , 2010 Rob, I'm no expert on this, but the MIC states that he was a sapper in the REs with the regimental No 37675. This of course is in addition to the North Staffords information. Regards, Kev Loughnane
sotonmate Posted 29 May , 2010 Share Posted 29 May , 2010 Rob My take on this is that he earned all of his medals on first landing in a war theatre, viz 10.9.1914.As his 1914 Star is to the N Staffs then so are the other two. The difference is that he was still with the N Staffs when the Star medal was issued ( I have sample Medal Roll pages which seem to say that the Star was issued after 1916,but I guess it might have been a bit up and down as I have a RIrish one dated Dec 1917),and was then serving with the RE at the end of the war when it became their duty to provide him with the BW and VMs,which they duly listed on Roll RE/101/B16 page 3173,but they would have entered the N Staffs details on the medals.
