Guest Pip Posted 28 May , 2004 Share Posted 28 May , 2004 Hi My Great Grandfather served as a Driver in the A.S.C. between 2.10.1916 and 9.10.1917. His reg no was T4/235961, I understand the T4 refers to Horse Transport. On a family death certificate dated 12.10.1916 his occupation is stated as "Driver A.S.C. No2 Depot". Does anybody know what or where the No2 depot was? Thanks Pip
crispy Posted 29 May , 2004 Share Posted 29 May , 2004 Pip. I am no expert on the A.S.C. but have looked up in one of my books, it being Army Service Corps 1902-1918 by Michael Young (who is an expert),looking through the book it shows that Numbers 1 & 2 Reserve HT Depots were formed at Deptford & Islington during August 1914. Another piece in the book makes reference to No2 Base MT Depot, Calais, its function seems to have been for all unused parts for the following vehicles; American lorries American tractors American cars & motor ambulances Foster-Daimler tractors Albion lorries Leyland lorries Thornycroft lorries Rolls-Royce motor cars Vauxhall motor cars Sunbeam motor cars The Depot at Calais came into being during 1916. I cannot see reference to any other unit with a similar number, but I will do a more detailed check for you, unless some other Forum member comes up with the answer for you, I expect that someone is an ASC/RASC specialist amongst the members, you were spot on regarding T4, Horse Transport.
