Guest laidlaw Posted 28 May , 2010 Share Posted 28 May , 2010 There is a print published Dec 11th 1915 from an original watercolour by Christopher Clark which I think is entitled "Dawn". It shows Piper Daniel Laidlaw of the KOSB in the act that won his VC, rallying the exhausted soldiers before they went over the top. He is playing "Blue Bonnets over the Border" while the horror of the battle of Loos breaks out around him. I am trying to trace the whereabouts of the original painting. Clark was a war artist and I believe he worked for a paper called The Regiment. I wonder if anyone can give me any information about "The Regiment." janecavell Posted 28 May , 2010 Share Posted 28 May , 2010 Here's a link to the British Library catalogue entry for 'The Regiment'. According to this it was subtitled 'An illustrated military journal for everybody' and ran from 1896 to 1917 (at least that's when the BL's run ends). It looks like they're held at the Newspaper Reading Room in Colindale, but if you plan to visit do check first, as I think some of the periodicals have now been moved to the main British Library site in St Pancras. According to Willing's Press Guide (1900), available via Google Books, 'The Regiment' came out every Saturday and cost a penny.
Guest laidlaw Posted 28 May , 2010 Share Posted 28 May , 2010 Thank you for your suggestions. I hadn't thought of the British Library and had Googled "The Regiment" without success. A few pointers to try anyway!
