New family member, did he serve?

Hi all

I have just picked up the threads of the family tree my father undertook some years ago and discovered an addition to the family in around 1886 that we were previously unaware of. The reason he was missed first time round was the family for some reason do not appear in the 1891 census but surface again in the 1901 Census and hence his discovery.

By 1914 he would have been about 28 years of age, would that have made himm too old for military service? His name was Frederick Winterbottom and as he was at least living in Rochdale in 1901 I supposed if he did serve the obvious unit would have been the LF's!

Any thoughts / suggestions very much appreciated

Hi there

At 28 he would have been a mere babe compared with some of the veterans who served. There's some discussion of this elsewhere on the forum: try this thread on the oldest casualties, for example.

I'm sure before long the folk with access to the medal index cards will come up with some suggestions as to regiments.

Good luck! :poppy:

It doesn't necessarily mean your man was killed, but checking the CWGC casualties, there are 6 F Winterbottoms (I did wonder if it could be Winterbotham but none appeared) and this chap seems to be geographically near....

Name: WINTERBOTTOM

Initials: F

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment)

Unit Text: 9th Bn.

Age: 41

Date of Death: 10/12/1918

Service No: 27926

Additional information: Son of Robert and Elizabeth Winterbottom, of 21, Hathershaw Lane, Oldham.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: 887.

Cemetery: MIKRA BRITISH CEMETERY, KALAMARIA

Hope it's not your man!

Many thanks to you both, at least I know that him serving was a possibility and age would not have been a bar.

Kevin, many thanks for your efforts however his parents were the late John & Ellen Winterbottom of Rochdale, as always I suppose it will be very difficult to discover his regiment etc if he survived the War!!

Any ideas how I can make a start on this please?

Thanks again

A search for his MIC might help, (Medal Index Card). Any Service papers on-line to accompany that would be a start. Was or did he get married hence his trade may be mentioned on the marriage certificate.

Twenty Fred/Frederick W on Ancestry mic, 4 or so with direct Lancashire connection (i.e.LF) but doesn't mean a lot as County associations broke down after conscription.

No service record on a cursory search.

If still in Rochdale have you tried the local library for a Roll of Honour (often includes all who served not just those who died) or Absent Voter List? If not local might be worth an e-mail to ask for a look up.

Yes I live in Rochdale and will check the suggested references, many thanks for that. However a friend recently undertaking a similar exercise requested the AVL and was informed they are no longer available! How or why he could not ascertain

Has anyone lse come u against this problem and where they might have been moved to, I cannot believe they would have been destroyed

David I too came upon this problem in the West Midlands.....it seems it varies from area to area....from what I can gather the info retained was for 'numbers only' and not as a record of each individual voter.

I'm sure someone more experienced will be along shortly.....

Good luck with your research.
