Joe Walsh Posted 27 May , 2010 Share Posted 27 May , 2010 Near where I live in Galway, Ireland is one of the old Anglo country houses. It belonged to the Trench family and the heir to the house, Frederic Sydney Trench died of wounds recieved at Beaumont Hamel on 21 November 1916. The house was passed on to relatives after Baroness Ashotwn died post WW2 and it fell into disrepair. Over the weekend whoever owns it now let us look around inside and it was quite strange thinking about the son and what it would have been like for him growing up there and leaving for the war. I'd like to do a little research on him and try and reconstruct his life for myself. I've seen where he grew up, now I'd like to know what led to his death. Would it be possible for someone to get his service papers for me? Lt. Frederick Sydney Trench First King's Royal Rifle Corps Son of Frederick Oliver Trench (Third Baron Ashtown) Educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford From Woodlawn, Galway, Ireland. I hope thats enough information. When I've done work I could upload it here with pictures of the house and stuff. It really is a beautiful country manor. KevinBattle Posted 14 January , 2012 Share Posted 14 January , 2012 As he was educated at Eton, he is probably on the Eton Roll of Honour which may provide additional background. Hopefully a Google will link you to it
MBrockway Posted 14 March , 2012 Share Posted 14 March , 2012 I have a feeling I've already posted this in the past, but here's Trench's obituary from the 1916 KRRC Chronicle ...
MBrockway Posted 14 March , 2012 Share Posted 14 March , 2012 Incidentally the Magdalen 1st VIII in 1912 went on to form the core of the GB Gold Medal winning VIII at the Stockholm Olympics, so a seat in the 2nd VIII was still something to be proud of! Cheers, Mark
MBrockway Posted 14 March , 2012 Share Posted 14 March , 2012 For additional background on Magdalen College Boat Club immediately before the war, do a forum search on Evelyn Southwell, 9/Rifle Brigade. Cheers, Mark
