I'm trying to find the action or even the general area where this individual might have been killed on 7 Nov 1917. The LLT is very sparse as to the actions the unit was engaged in. Any help gratefully appreciated.

Date seems off. CWGC has:-

Name: WILTON

Initials: E

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: Manchester Regiment

Unit Text: 2nd/10th Bn.

Date of Death: 09/10/1917

Service No: 377427

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: IV. B. 4.

Cemetery: NINE ELMS BRITISH CEMETERY

The Cemetery information indicates he may have died of wounds incurred up to a few days earlier

The cemetery was begun and used by the 3rd Australian and 44th Casualty Clearing Stations when they moved to Poperinghe (now Poperinge), from Brandhoek and Lijssenthoek respectively, in September 1917. Nearly all the burials in Plots I to IX came from these Casualty Clearing Stations, whilst they operated in this area during the 1917 Battle of Ypres, up until December 1917.

In fact, there were 50 killed on 9th, most on Tyne Cot Memorial, so suggests passchendale attacks to me...

Thank you for that information. Someone here always knows the answer. I had guessed Passchendaele but had nothing to confirm it.

They were indeed... specific vicinty was 'Augustus Wood'. Lead battalions were to be the 2/4th East Lancs and the 2/9th Manchesters followed up by the 2/5th East Lancs (stretched out in two lines covering the rear of both lead battalions). The 2/10th Manchesters were the reserve battalion.... However, the eventuality of the actual events caused this planning to go somewhat awry!

LLT gives this outline.

2/10th Manchester (from Manchester Regiment page):

"In November 1914 was placed under command of 198th Brigade in 66th (2nd East Lancashire) Division. Moved to Crowborough in May 1915, went on to Colchester in March 1916. February 1917 : landed in France."

66th Division (from division page):

"The Division received orders on 11 February 1917 for embarkation for France. Entrainment began on 25 February and by 16 March all units had arrived and the Division concentrated under XI Corps. The Division then remained in France and Flanders and took part in the following engagements:

- The Operations on the Flanders Coast (Operation Hush) ( 26 June - 25 September 1917)

- The Battle of Poelcapelle 1917, a phase of the Third Battles of the Ypres (6-10 October 1917)".

Battalion history has a briefish mention of the day. A pretty similar experience to the 2/9th in getting to the line so having taken 11 hours to get to the front line, they were told just to keep on and try to make up ground to get to their support position. Eventually they took cover in shell holes around Augustus Wood. As Mitchinson puts it, the saving grace was that the mud absorbed the explosion of shells so casualties were not as high as they might otherwise have been been.
