would any of you chaps happen to know were the 2/8th bn on the somme that day.the cwgc states he was kia 1july16, and is buried at serre cemetary, but as i understand other men from all over were also buried there not just men from the battle of july 01.

any help you may give me will i am sure go some way to solve this puzzle.

CWGC record says he was 1/8th Battalion. This makes much more sense than 2/8th Bn for a casualty of 1 July 1916. 1/8th was involved in an attack at the Quadrilateral (or Heidenkopf position) at Serre. There is a lot about this action on the forum - search will bring it up. 2/8th Bn was miles away on the Fromelles front.

I have him in 2/8 which he cannot be as Chris says. He was missing in action on July 1. His wife appealed for news in the Missing Soldiers Bureau column of the Bham Weekly Post on October 7 1916. It is therefore surprising that he has a marked grave as opposed to a name on the Thiepval Memorial. She was living at 71, Electric Av, Witton.

Hi

Your man is buried in Serre Road Number 2 Cemetery in Plot 2 Row C grave 21 which means that his body was found in the Spring of 1917 by the clearance team of V Corps.

Peter
