Guest fhaccord Posted 23 May , 2010 Share Posted 23 May , 2010 Hi My Grandad Frank Higham joined the Royal Engineers in Sheffield his number was 2469. According to my father Grandad did not join when the war started and rec'd the dreaded white feather treatment He ended the war in India (after being torpedoed en route) and the story is that when the end of the war was announced he and his comrades broke into the stores and all got drunk - they were court martialled and the sentence was an extra year in India. When he returned he married my Gran. I have done the ancestry.co searches and cannot find anything. Anyone any suggestions? Many thanks Frank
rksimpson Posted 23 May , 2010 Share Posted 23 May , 2010 Hi Frank Here is the reference to his medal index card - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...p;resultcount=1 It confirms what you said about him joining up later - see - http://www.1914-1918.net/renumbering.htm By searching on Ancestry - do you mean you have looked for his service records? as his MIC should be there as well and that may have some more information on it. When searching for his service records try a few different things like adding or leaving out a few of the search parameters. If you find nothing then unfortunately there is not much else you can try Here are a few things you can look at http://www.1914-1918.net/cre.htm http://www.1914-1918.net/grandad/records.htm http://www.1914-1918.net/grandad/medals.htm http://www.1914-1918.net/grandad/avl.htm regards Robert
Terry_Reeves Posted 24 May , 2010 Share Posted 24 May , 2010 Frank Looking at his medal index card, he was a member of 2/1st West Riding Field Company RE. This was renamed 458 Field Company in 1917 when there was a change in designation and at the same time personnel in TF units were renumbered. The company was originally raised in 1914 for the 62nd (West Riding) Division and transferred to the 49th (West Riding) Division on 23 June , 1915. Their war diary can be found at the NA in : WO 95/2783 458 Field Company Royal Engineers 1915 June - 1919 May TR
sued Posted 12 June , 2010 Share Posted 12 June , 2010 Hi Frank, My grandfather was also in the 458th Field Company RE. He joined up in November 1914 in Sheffield and kept a diary throughout 1915. You may be interested to know that I've obtained the company's war diary from the National Archives. Sue
