BrendanLee Posted 23 May , 2010 Share Posted 23 May , 2010 Can anyone tell me where this soldier died, Lieutenant BROWN, BERNARD LOFTUS M.C. Royal Garrison Artillery. Commemorated HOLLYBROOK MEMORIAL, SOUTHAMPTON. I am researching soldiers KIA in Ireland during the War of Independence, I have the name of a Lieutenant Brown but the two sources I have give his initials as S D and S L. ralphjd Posted 23 May , 2010 Share Posted 23 May , 2010 His medal card is just noted "died" and his father sent for his medals in 1923. Ralph.
sotonmate Posted 23 May , 2010 Share Posted 23 May , 2010 BL This Memorial is not far from here and I have visited it a few times. It has names of mostly military who were lost at sea in WW1,including Kitchener himself (on HMS Hampshire when it went down off the coast of Scotland). CWGC shows your Officer's details as you have posted.,and with 26 Heavy Battery RGA when he died. Medal Index Card shows he first entered a war zone (France) on 24.8.1917,and that he died on 1/11/1920. His father requested his medals on 16.2.1923. SDGW won't have his entry because the dates go only to 1919.There is no entry in De Ruvigny either. I will see if I can pay a visit to find his name,as it might be appended to a particular ship's panel at the Memorial. Sotonmate PS I note that the CWGC entry for Hollybrook also states that, apart from those lost at sea,it includes those who "died at home but could not be recoverd for burial".
