stephen p nunn Posted 20 May , 2010 Share Posted 20 May , 2010 Dear all, I picked up a Victory Medal today to a Private T. Daniels of the ASC (DM2-166327). His medal card indicates entitlement to the pair and that his first name was Thomas. Apart from that there is nothing else about him. Any ASC experts out there that can add anything please? Many thanks. SPN Maldon.
Peridot Posted 20 May , 2010 Share Posted 20 May , 2010 Hi Maldon Whilst not professing to be an expert on the ASC the pre-fix denotes a Mechanical Transport Learner and was discontinued I think in November 1916. The number is before my grandfathers which was M2/183692 and after Norman Holding's father's in the 153 series which would indicate an approximate date of enlistment between Feb and June 1916. I would think April'ish. Would probably at that time have gone abroad fairly quickly. Have got a suggested outline re my grandfather from various sources which may give an idea of your man's route abroad-Grove Park, Osterley Park, Tidworth,(possibly Wells near Bristol), Avonmouth and Le Havre. Sorry can't be of more help. Good Luck Peridot

Peridot Posted 21 May , 2010 Share Posted 21 May , 2010 Hi Maldon Have just done a quick root in the burnt records series index on Ancestry and there are 773 surviving records under that surname, one of the Thomas's might be your man. Might be worth a look if you have a subscription or if you can get library access. Peridot

Peridot Posted 22 May , 2010 Share Posted 22 May , 2010 Hi Maldon That's great news about the Pension Records-when you have gone through them I'd be very interested to know how they correspond ,if at all, with my suggested date of enlistment and itinerary for Thomas. Guest Posted 22 May , 2010 Share Posted 22 May , 2010 Maldon, it's easy to miss things after a long day trawling through them. I have had a look, and as I said, if you look backwards , first, there are quite a few more pages. Not sure if they are copies of the other ( paging forward ) records, bu tworth a look. Cheers Mike You're becoming a bit of a collector Maldon
Peridot Posted 22 May , 2010 Share Posted 22 May , 2010 I suppose that one of the reasons I am a member of the Forum is the fond hope that someone will find part of my grandfather's record stuck to the back of something else. I accept that this grows increasingly unlikely with the years and the scant clues available but this man did bring me up til I was 10 and am not prepared to let his memory die because I didn't ask the right questions at the right time. I was born in 1951 and he was born in a different world in 1885. That did not stop us becoming best mates and I have recently written an article on him for a local history magazine. I am happy and privileged to have known him albeit for a short time and hope that his values and attitudes have been instilled in me. May he and all old Tommies never grow old and die. Peridot Posted 24 May , 2010 Share Posted 24 May , 2010 Great stuff mate. Would love to read the article. Best wishes. SPN Maldon Thanks Maldon-The article may be too big to upload to the Forum, so if you let me have your email address by PM, I'll send it to you in the published format even though this contained a couple of mistakes. It was actually written as a general account of some of my childhood with my grandparents and contains only passing reference to the War-mainly because I did not have as much information when I wrote it as now, and much new info has come to light courtesy of other members of the Forum, which has enabled further deductions to be made which are hopefully accurate. I may do a follow-up. Its set at Fidler's Ferry near Penketh, Warrington, if you have heard of it. Was there only yesterday. There's also passing reference to the Admiralty programme of building concrete barges and tugs at the end of the War as two of the barges were built there and possibly another two started before cancellation. Some remains of the slipways are still visible and a building is still there. Peridot
David B Posted 24 May , 2010 Share Posted 24 May , 2010 Maldon, I suppose I am a bit late but there are 23 pages of records in the pensions section of Ancestry's military grouping. Thomas Daniels DM2-166327 joined up on 25 March 1916 at Chelmsford at the age of 38 years. If you have'nt access to Ancestry will look up the main features of his record if you wish David
