Frank Burke Posted 20 May , 2010 Share Posted 20 May , 2010 Hullo, I'm looking for a PH gas hood. I chose this type of gas mask because it is the most versatile. Indeed, I've heard that this pattern was still in vogue after the SBR came out. It was also the standard gas equipment during the Somme offensive in 1916, which is a battle in which I am particularly interested. So, I was wondering, where can I get one? Does anyone out there know of a supplier? I'd appreciate any help that is forthcoming. Thanks, Frank
RobL Posted 20 May , 2010 Share Posted 20 May , 2010 If you're after a reproduction, the best ones made were by some bloke called Harry Watt who sold them via ebay, but doesn't appear to do any. I don't know about 'staying in vogue' after the SBR, itwas worn as a back up up to, IIRC, February 1918 when finally discarded (although probably started to be done before so), the only reason I can think of it being superior to the SBR in anyway whatsoever is that it covered the whole of the head in case of mustard gas attack, in every other way the SBR was far superior. For the Somme, you'll need two PH hoods - although the SBR started to come in before long, the Leicester Brigade at least had theres by the time they went in again in September, from what I remember they got theres in August 1916
