john gregory Posted 19 May , 2010 Share Posted 19 May , 2010 Can anyone help with any info on 200516 Sgt. Thomas Anthony, Notts and Derby Regiment. Which Battalion, when enlisted, anything at all, thanks a lot. JG
ralphjd Posted 19 May , 2010 Share Posted 19 May , 2010 According to his Medal Index Card he was entitled to the British War and Victory Medals only. No date on the card so he presumably went to France after December 1915. Cannot find any other records for him unfortunately. Ralph.

sotonmate Posted 19 May , 2010 Share Posted 19 May , 2010 jg His number relates to the 1917 re-numbering of the 5th Battalion. To see what the original Medal Roll says about this you need to see WO329/1400 page 5174,where the Battalion he served on landing in a war zone will be shown. SteveE Posted 19 May , 2010 Share Posted 19 May , 2010 As Sotonmate has already suggested his 6-digit number is consistant with the range of numbers issued to the 5th battalion as part of the 1917 renumbering of the Territorial Force. The Territorials were usually pretty consistant with their renumbering and issued the numbers in sequence, the details I've added below show how the later renumbering correlates with the original number. The gaps in the sequence, where the original number was not renumbered, would be due to death, discharge or transfer to another unit. I would suggest therefore that Thomas had an earlier number and is likely to be either 2431, 2432 or 2433. 2421 - 200510 Batty, Frederick 2422 - 200511 Smith, Arnold 2423 2424 - 200512 Sandall, William E 2425 2426 - 200513 Naylor, Ernest 2427 2428 2429 - 200514 Barber, Edward 2430 xxxx - 200515 ? 2431 xxxx - 200516 Anthony, Thomas 2432 2433 2434 - 200517 Spencer, Harold 2436 - 200518 Hardy, Edward 2437 - 200519 Roe, Frederick 2438 - 200520 Edwards, Ernest Hope it helps. PPCLI Posted 20 May , 2010 Share Posted 20 May , 2010 The medal roll shows him serving with the 2/5th Bn. Re enlistment - as Steve says, the original number for Thomas is likely to have been either 2431, 2432 or 2433. The following are dates of enlistment for 5th men: 2425 - 4 Sep 1914 2427 - 4 Sep 1914 2443 - 4 Sep 1914 2459 - 4 Sep 1914 So, if I was forced to make a wild guess.... PPCLI Posted 20 May , 2010 Share Posted 20 May , 2010 Hi John, As far as I can see (from MIC), Private Anthony wasn't eligible for a SWB. He may of course have been wounded, but not to such an extent that he was discharged and entitled to a SWB. My reference to the SWB roll was just to let you know the source of the 4 Sep 1914 date.
