David B Posted 19 May , 2010 Share Posted 19 May , 2010 Tocemma, It seems to me that there are plenty of cashed up folk out there with too much money and too little sense to use it on. Fleabay brings them all together. David
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 19 May , 2010 Share Posted 19 May , 2010 Surely this would depend on wether you were a Buyer or Seller?? The market decides,it takes two to Tango [@ least]~No rash bidders ergo no high prices, same as in "Real Auctions" if the Auctioneer has two or more high left maximum bids, the lot could go for way above the normal estimate. Grovetown Posted 20 May , 2010 Share Posted 20 May , 2010 Have to say I was fairly unsurprised by what this made. They've never been easy to find, and were always relatively expensive. This was a very good one too. And, if serious about uniform and equipment, they're more-or-less a 'must have'. Also: although a private auction, I have a very good (unconfirmed) idea of who bought this - a well established member of the forum, and no mug at all in these matters. Cheers, GT. mark holden Posted 20 May , 2010 Share Posted 20 May , 2010 GT, I am with you. Regrettably I was not collecting WW1 militaria when it seems to have been very cheap all those years ago. The reality is that it now demands increasingly high prices unless you are very lucky and stumble on items at Car Boots or Fleamarkets which only happens occasionally. We can all slam ebay but dealers lists are often even more expensive. So for the unfortunate recent WW1 collectors like me we will have to continue to dig deep. I wasn't the winning bidder on this BTW! regards Mark Have to say I was fairly unsurprised by what this made. They've never been easy to find, and were always relatively expensive. Paddy 60th Posted 20 May , 2010 Share Posted 20 May , 2010 WW1 Bag Mint Condition WW1 Officers Shoulder Bag Dated 1917 Wining bid: £391.00 PH Bag Blimey, better have a look in the spares box boys...... Wonder how much it would have been with the mask, inner bag and goggles! Tocemma I bet the seller couldn't believe how much it sold for either bearing in mind the starting price. Thought the bakelite buttons on the front were not quite right though but could of course have been added later.

wainfleet Posted 20 May , 2010 Share Posted 20 May , 2010 I think all the buttons on it were probably ok. They did vary quite considerably on PH bags. PH for Personal Handbag?
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 20 May , 2010 Share Posted 20 May , 2010 .... bearing in mind the starting price. In the words of the old song "Its Not Where We Start. It's Where We Finish......" Often sellers start with 99p start knowing full well the item is going to make hundreds...known in the trade as a "Come & Get Me"
ForeignGong Posted 21 May , 2010 Share Posted 21 May , 2010 Hi All Just a point of interest, there were 7 bidders on that item & there has to be an under bidder. Not like some auction houses that bounce bids of walls to bump the price up. As long as it was genuine. Peter
