lostinspace Posted 19 May , 2010 Share Posted 19 May , 2010 Stumbled onto this site yesterday, full text Great War related books including histories of the 9th, 18th, 20th, 25th, 33rd, 42nd and 56th Divisions. Spent most of the afternoon looking through the collection and probably just scratched the surface. Not sure that the files can be downloaded but you can use the PDF function to copy individual pages. Hopefully everyone interested will be able to access http://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/000545832 Regards, Dave
MBrockway Posted 19 May , 2010 Share Posted 19 May , 2010 Dave, Are you able to actually view these texts? Everything I have tried just gives this message ... "Full view is not available for this item due to copyright © restrictions." I can browse the catalogue ... and what a gold mine for the rifles specialists! ... but I cannot actually view anything. What's the secret? Cheers, Mark
lostinspace Posted 19 May , 2010 Author Share Posted 19 May , 2010 Mark, I was hopeful that those of you who live in the UK would be able to access the files but if you're getting that message I would guess that the information is restricted to the US (and Canada?). In the US books that were published before 1923 are in the public domain, that's apparently not the case in the UK. I wonder why that wouldn't apply to texts from the Internet Archive though? I have listed quite a few books from that site and only one person from Britain contacted me who couldn't access them (one person who let me know about it anyway), I would like more feedback from forum members, if it turns out that everyone has the same problem, well, you know who to contact for lookups! Philip Wilson Posted 19 May , 2010 Share Posted 19 May , 2010 Dave Thank you for providing this link. Like Mark I searched the database earlier today but it would not allow me to download any material. My recollection is that it required a password. I have saved it to my favourites for it contains some very useful info to evaluate at leisure. Best wishes Philip
MartinWills Posted 20 May , 2010 Share Posted 20 May , 2010 Looks like it is copyright issues related to US & UK. The internet archive tends not to filter in this way but simply makes a copyright statement indicating that that whilst free of copyright restrictions in the US it may not be elsewhere. I'm now researching ways of spoofing a UK IP address to look like it's in North America. Cheers, Mark

Guest markspark Posted 13 September , 2011 Share Posted 13 September , 2011 Hi Dave, if you are still doing lookups, I would appreciate it if you could look up the context surrounding the search result for "Stevens" in the KRRC Chronicle of 1936, also for "Meiktila" in the 1937 chronicle. thanks, Mark Thanks for all the info, my offer to do lookups in anything held by the Hathi Trust still stands, should I also post in the lookups section? ddycher Posted 14 September , 2011 Share Posted 14 September , 2011 Folks I found that if you go to the "buy book" option (if there is one there is not on all entries) I can atleast from here in Hong Kong read a full copy on-line. CGM Posted 14 September , 2011 Share Posted 14 September , 2011 Hi Dave, Is it possible to download these texts or only read on line? I have a Barnes and Noble "kin*le" in my son's house in America. I have trouble downloading to it over here because of my UK address but if I could download over there and then bring it back it would be really good. Regards Dave I have just tried this from the wilds of North Yorkshire and I have just read the whole(I glanced through most of it actually!!)of 1915 and found it most useful for obituaries and some photos of officers killed during 1915. A really useful source of info and one that I will definitely look at again. Robert
lostinspace Posted 27 September , 2011 Author Share Posted 27 September , 2011 Mark, Sorry, the cut-off date is 1923 (anything before that year is considered public domain here), the R.B. full text is available from 1890 to 1922 and the K.R.R.C. full text from 1902 to 1922. I can't get this from UK as I'm getting message its US access only A copy of the page would be even better thanks in advance Peter Eastman
stiletto_33853 Posted 23 May , 2014 Share Posted 23 May , 2014 Hi Peter, He is mentioned in the chronicle and page that you mention. "In June, a Military Tournament was held in Belfast in which Sergeant Eastman, Corporals G. Webb and Caris, and A/ Corporal Saunders took prizes" This is under the 2nd Battalions sports section. Will scan the page a little later for you. Andy
MaureenE Posted 24 May , 2014 Share Posted 24 May , 2014 Seven editions of the Rifle Brigade Chronicle for the years 1890-1905 (but not 1891) are available on Archive.org, which someone has kindly uploaded from the Google Books copies available in North America. It would be great if someone with access could add more to Archive.org The links have been added to the FIBIS Fibiwiki page "The Rifle Brigade" where you can see the years available. http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/Rifle_Brigade Cheers Maureen
Peter Eastman Posted 24 May , 2014 Share Posted 24 May , 2014 Thanks Andy, really appreciated. This single sentence finally confirms that my great grandfather 8039 E R Eastman who served with Rifle Brigade from 1886 - 1918 was in Belfast in 1891 ( No reference in UK census found, and Irish census info for 1891 destroyed). It also fits with his military records re Rifle Brigade and second battalion locations, I'm delighted, scan in due course also very much welcome, sincere thanks Peter
stiletto_33853 Posted 24 May , 2014 Share Posted 24 May , 2014 Glad it helped you Peter, away for the weekend but will scan the pages relevant to the 2nd RB and your relation as soon as I get back. Maureen, I have all the Rifle Brigade Chronicles and when it became The Royal Green Jackets Chronicle from 1890 (1st year produced) until 2004 when I ceased getting the publication as there was very little then to do with WW1 which is my interest. Some of these chronicles are over 400 pages. Scanning them to place on archive.org would be a monumental task which I simply do not have the time for. All of the Chronicles are available through purchase on reputable book sites and auction sites, one company I believe has started reprinting some of them. There is also another Rifle Brigade publication called "The Journal" which came out every six months of which I have 95% of and are an extremely useful resource, should I scan these also for Archive.org. MaureenE Posted 25 May , 2014 Share Posted 25 May , 2014 Andy, what I had in mind was that someone in North America who had access to the Google Books files (which are freely available there up to 1922) could upload more to Archive.org. As you live in England, there would be I think copyright restrictions which would mean you shouldn't upload anything printed after about 1873 without permission of the copyright holder. Because of the different copyright rules applying in the USA anything published up to 1922 is out of copyright. (I am aware from another GWF thread there are changes to British copyright legislation pending http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=209029, but I don't know the effect of the changes) Cheers Maureen
lostinspace Posted 26 May , 2014 Author Share Posted 26 May , 2014 Maureen, I don't think that would work out too well for the 'someone'. When I originally posted the above I wasn't aware that Hathi Trust was limited to North America or that it was their specific policy to limit liability for potentially breaking the copyright laws of other countries - something else to keep in mind is that unless you belong to one of the schools or public libraries that provide material to the Hathi Trust you are restricted to page by page downloading. Since Google and Internet Archive do not have the same policies on their pre-1923 books I think they will probably attempt to blame the individual that does the downloading (if they get into copyright violation difficulties); they do post disclaimers regarding copyright infringement for countries outside of North America.
